Job Description

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs, parenting education and family advocacy.Job SummaryThe Relief Program Support Worker works on the ground floor with homeless and under-housed people by providing support to the laundry and shower program and harm reduction program.The Relief Program Support Worker is required to work in ways that are respectful and inclusive of all services users, staff and volunteers and that promotes the mission and values of RPCHC.This is a relief position. Hours of work are on an as required basis according to program needs. There are no regular or guaranteed hours of relief work. Staff will also have the opportunity to participate in HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan).This is a bargaining unit position within OPSEU Local 5115.Salary$19.10 per hourHoursHours of work are on an as required basis according to program needs. There are no regular or guaranteed hours of relief work.Application DeadlineOctober 19, 2022Responsibilities Include

  • Provides coverage to the shower and laundry service including monitoring and supervising the shower and laundry program and keeping an active list of who is waiting to be seen;
  • When working in the harm reduction room distributes harm reduction supplies and provides harm reduction support to clients;
  • Helps put harm reduction orders away;
  • Provides harm reduction support to the needle pick up program: does localized needle pick up in and around Regent Park, scanning areas for discarded harm reduction supplies and disposing of them safely;
  • Responds to discarded harm reduction supply clean-up requests from neighborhood business owners or apartment buildings;
  • Assists in promoting opportunities for community members to come together for events e.g. annual client barbecue, advocacy events, etc.;
  • Provide information to clients on available resources;
  • Documents interactions with clients and the community according to RPCHC guidelines and standards;
  • Intervenes in situations which have the potential to become disrespectful or unsafe by using de-escalation and trauma informed communication skills when there are conflicts and/or when clients are volatile, remaining until situation is rectified; Follows RPCHC’s anti-discrimination policies and policy of respect with regard to discriminatory, disruptive or unsafe behaviors;
  • Ensures that the community hall/reception area on the ground floor is welcoming and user friendly.
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Relevant work/lived experience;
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience working in community based settings with homeless and marginalized individuals, including people who use drugs;
  • Lived experience within the priority population and/or experience working with racialized people, Indigenous people, people who engage in sex work, prisoners/ex-prisoners, people with mental health issues, people who have experienced trauma;
  • People who have experienced homelessness or street involvement is considered an asset;
  • Excellent understanding and commitment to harm reduction practices and principles;
  • Demonstrated experience with overdose prevention and response;
  • Previous outreach experience is an asset;
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the health issues of a diverse community and experience working with disenfranchised populations;
  • Understanding of impacts of systemic oppression on marginalized individuals and communities;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, decision making, conflict management, critical thinking and organizational skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
