With a wealth of data and analytic expertise, we create trusted evidence that has changed health policy and practice and helps ensure better health for all.Ready to discover more with us Join our outstanding, collaborative team where your skills, knowledge and curiosity are valued and can change the future of health care.Introduction:The Indigenous Data Team (IDT) at Health Data Research Network, Canada (HDRN) is an Indigenous-led team looking for a highly motivated individual to assist with tasks related to research, analysis, planning, and writing. This role is housed at ICES- Central (previously the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences) and will be conducted virtually. Under the supervision of the Indigenous Data Team Lead and in collaboration with the team and HDRN, you will be responsible for assisting in a variety of administrative and non-administrative tasks. We are seeking a Research Assistant with existing knowledge on culturally safe Indigenous health research and data governance processes, and an eagerness to learn more. As part of the IDT, we will work together to ensure that First Nations, Inuit, and Métis data governance priorities are implemented throughout HDRN.The Research Assistant supports the research program by providing assistance related to research activities which may include in the administrative and budgetary assistance.Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:

  • Assist the Indigenous Data Team in carrying out activities on assigned projects (activities may vary depending on assigned project):
  • Liaise and coordinate with the research team and internal/external stakeholders in carrying out project activities (for example in support of primary data collection activities);
  • Assist in preparation of REB applications and renewals, submission of chart requests, coordination of hospital visits by abstractors and preparation and development of case record forms;
  • Assist in development of abstractor training manuals and coordinating abstractor training sessions and associated materials;
  • Assist in the management of project budgets, timelines and deliverables, coordinate the purchase of supplies for meetings as required;
  • Prepare expense reports; facilitate collection and payment of invoices;
  • Perform data entry, data quality assurance and audit activities for research projects as required
  • Assist in the drafting and preparation of investigative reports, manuscripts, abstracts and teaching materials, correspondence and memos;
  • Conduct literature searches using MEDLINE and the Internet, retrieve documents from Sunnybrook, University of Toronto and ICES libraries;
  • Enter reference material into Reference Manager Database.
2. Duties in support of research:
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications – drafting of text, preparation of appendices;
  • Coordinate meetings of program or project teams, prepare meeting agendas and any required background material; produce and distribute minutes;
  • General support in coordinating meetings, prepare materials for conference/workshops/special projects as required (i.e., PowerPoint slides, overhead transparencies);
  • Coordinate and arrange all necessary travel;
  • Assist with communication within the Program (e.g., organization of rounds, preparation of newsletters);
  • Provide backup support for other members of the administrative support team when required, which may include sending case lists to chart abstractors;
  • Perform other duties as appropriate and necessary for the efficient functioning of the team;
3. Other duties as may be assigned within the scope of this position.Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Health Sciences, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 2 years’ experience in a health care or research/decision support environment;
  • Working knowledge of research terminology and Indigenous methodologies;
  • Ability to work remotely and independently, and seek support when needed;
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team and in partnership with Indigenous organization;
  • The successful candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous cultures in Canada, preferably through personal lived experiences;
  • The successful candidate will also be someone who has extensive connections within Indigenous communities;
  • Fully proficient in the use of MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Internet Explorer) Reference Manager, as well as the ability to work with computerized databases;
  • Maintain strict confidence as required when interacting with stakeholders;
  • Well-developed oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills to manage and prioritize workload responsibilities and timelines;
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of Project Management fundamentals;
  • Ability to multi-task works accurately and effectively under pressure, meets deadlines, and remains composed in high-pressure situations;
  • Creativity and experience with digital design an asset;
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language an asset.

As such, this position is currently working remotely within Ontario for an undetermined period.
