A Better World.Don’t miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world’s best in paediatric healthcare.Position DescriptionPostdoctoral Position in Cardiovascular BiomechanicsFaculty/Division: Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and Division of Cardiovascular SurgeryCampus: University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick ChildrenDescriptionThe Advanced Thermal/Fluids Optimization, Modelling and Simulation (ATOMS) Laboratory in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is looking to fill a Postdoctoral position. ATOMS research methods involve numerical simulations of multi-scale, multi-physics biomedical systems using in-house and commercial codes with experimental calibration and validation of simulation models at SickKids.We are announcing this open position to focus on fluid flow applications in the cardiovascular systems for congenital cardiac pathologies and devices for Fontan procedures.Description of Duties: The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof. Cristina Amon (MIE, U of Toronto) and Dr. Osami Honjo (SickKids, UHN) in a project sponsored by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, perform research and training, prepare reports and presentations, develop research proposals and funding applications, supervise and train undergraduate/graduate students on a day-to-day basis, and author scientific publications and conference talks.Minimum QualificationsEducationDoctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Physics, or related fields with a focus on numerical simulation of fluid flow in the cardiovascular system, as well as related experimental work.ExperienceFamiliarity with North America’s academic/scientific research environment. Academic experience as graduate student or postdoctoral fellow in the US or Canada would fulfill this requirement.SkillsKnowledge of and experience with several of the following:Advanced CFD/FEA methods and algorithms for laminar and turbulent flow, and fluid-structure interaction,Commercial and open-source CFD codes, such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, SimVascular, OpenFOAM and/or FEniCS,Workflows for the creation of patient-specific simulations models from CT/MRI data,Commercial or open-source mesh generation tools (e.g., MeshSim, Tetgen, GMSH),Design and construction of experimental flow loops and associated instrumentation and data acquisition systems,Ethical procurement of patient-specific data, including the development and submission of applications to Ethical Review Boards, andStrong technical and analytical skills with solid understanding of relevant research methodologies, with an outstanding record of peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals.Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.Ability to identify, develop and effectively pursue opportunities for research collaborations and partnerships.OtherWell-developed interpersonal, communication and analytical skills.Ability to mentor effectively students and to exercise tact and judgement in working with personnel under their supervision.Demonstrated initiative and technical ability.Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.Employment Type: Full-time 1 year term with possible renewal, 1.0 FTEThe normal hours of work are 35 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.Application Instructions: Applications should send resumes by July 20, 2021 to both Dr. Cristina Amon (cristina.amon.utoronto.ca) and Dr. Osami Honjo (via SickKids Careers page).
