A Better World.Don’t miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world’s best in paediatric healthcare.Position DescriptionThe Research Information Technology (RIT) Systems Team at the Hospital for Sick Children is seeking a highly motivated Systems Administrator to support the operation of the Mouse Imaging Centre (“MICe”), a computing intensive research lab that is part of the SickKids Research Institute. The Mouse Imaging Centre uses advanced imaging technologies such as MRI, X-ray computed, tomography, and ultrasound in mouse models of human disease to answer questions about human health. As the systems administrator for this group, you would manage a complex computing environment that includes high-performance workstations, backend computing and storage as well as specialized hardware that supports the imaging equipment. You would interact with a team of researchers and scientific software developers to maintain a highly customized software environment. As a member of the RIT’s Systems Team, you would also support the greater mission of the SickKids Research Institute, and work in collaboration with other IT groups across the organization while maintaining excellence in customer service.Reporting to the Snr Manager, RIT Infrastructure, with oversight by the Principal Investigator MICe, you will support a variety of technologies. We will need you to hit the ground running while taking over management of a Linux desktop environment, ZFS fileservers, and local computing resources. Self-motivated individuals will find opportunities for skills development in areas such as virtualization, automation, databases, security, large storage systems, network design, technical evaluation, project management and high-performance computing.Heres What Youll Get to Do:

  • Primary support for a customized Ubuntu Linux desktop environment supporting several dozen users
  • Manage a large local and off-site mirrored storage system
  • Manage a range of local and internet facing servers and a virtualization environment
  • Maintenance of hardware and liaison with vendors under the terms of support and warranty agreements
  • Maintain and update technical documentation
  • Other duties as assigned to support Research IT systems administration
Here’s What You’ll Need:
  • BSc in Computer Science or other related field, equivalent College level certification (in Systems Administration), or equivalent work experience
  • A thorough understanding Linux operating systems and their administration (desktop and server)
  • Experience managing virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere
  • Good understanding of common network protocols such as NFS, SMB, LDAP, DNS, DHCP, TFTP, and NTP
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages including Bash, and Python or Perl
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with peers, scientific and technical audiences
  • Must have the initiative and ability to take ownership of assigned tasks and complete them to required standards and deadlines
Qualifications and Experiences below are considered an asset:
  • Experience with remote desktop solutions for Linux
  • Experience compiling custom software
  • Familiarity with scientific software such as Matlab and R
  • Experience supporting large storage devices (SAN/NAS) and good understanding of file systems such as ZFS and OneFS
  • Good understanding of Ethernet and related network technologies
  • Experience with systems automation tools such as Ansible
  • Experience with monitoring systems such as Icinga2 and LibreNMS
  • Experience with ITSM ServiceDesk Plus or Service Now; issue and project tracking tools such as Jira
  • Knowledge and/or experience with Agile principles and frameworks
  • ITIL certification and/or experience working in an organization that supports IT service management best practices
