Job Description

The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)! This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. Come join the big Transport family, here in Toronto!We are looking for a Technical Specialist to execute the key accountabilities listed below. The successful candidate will be primarily focused on the technical aspects of driving the development team to provide the features/functionality for the specified release. S/he will also drive the team while maintaining cost, schedule, and quality aspects of the product.As well as new development, you will drive the team on maintenance issues of existing FW products.A thorough understanding of CENELEC railway standards, or similar, is required to meet the overall product/project requirements, consistent with the standards of Thales Rail Signaling Solutions.Key Responsibilities:Working with Software Engineering Manager: Plans, coordinates and monitors the performance of the work, identifies and manages risks during all the Work Package lifecycle until the closure; Ensures compliance with commitments relating to his/her Work Package (costs, deadlines, quality) in accordance with project plans and objectives; He/she performs this role from authorization to start until closure of the work package for all aspects of the work package including organization, scheduling, effort, budget, etc.; Assists on staffing plans and in adherence to capital and expense budgets; Ensures all recommendations (such as training, tools, etc.) adhere to overall departmental budget; Assists in preparation of the Work Package Agreements; Assists in Management and Maintenance of the Work Packages; Manages and coordinates internal teams performing a work packageLiaising with the Solution Engineering Manager for all aspects relating to his/her work packageConducting all work package activities (including those relating to risks and opportunities) to complete the projectDefining the Software development cycle, and tailoring the Software Engineering EnvironmentWriting the Software Development PlanCertify the software structure is defined and maintained for the entire lifecycle of the project/productEnsuring that the software team adheres to in-scope standards, software reuse policy and software development plansProviding leadership and motivation to staff while acting as a mentor to assigned staffDeliver input to manage and evaluate employee's performancePrepare and implement low level plans, schedules and budgets for software projects and reports statusContribute to Specification, Designs codes, debugs, write test procedures and tests software code, chairs design reviewsProvision review code, test procedures and test resultsAnalyze and implement corrections for defect reportsProvide cost estimates for software during the bid processAssess risks and the value associated with the risks during the software for a particular bidRequired Skills and Experience:University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related fieldMinimum of 8 years relevant working experiencePreferred Skills and Experience:Understanding of work package management conceptUnderstanding and managing the risksExperience in handling small software development teamsDeep understanding of the project management principles (ideally achieved through managing projects for multiple years or through a PMP or equivalent designation)Practical experience in terms of creating and executing complex test plans and proceduresAbility to manage projects within budget/schedule in a challenging environmentSoftware development experience in programming languages used in the area of control such as C, C++, C-Sharp, Java etc.Practical experience in using typical programs which are part of Microsoft Office SuitePractical experience in using with scheduling and budgeting applications such as Primavera, Microsoft Project etc.Practical experience with source control, IDE and requirements management tools (e.g. Eclipse, Jira, Git, ClearCase, ClearQuest, Doors, etc.)Knowledgeable of SelTrac CBTC signaling systemsWorking knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods and tools (including but not limited to international Railway standards)Professional Engineer (P.Eng) Licence or Project Management Professional (PMP) designation would be an assetThis position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
