We’re looking for innovative team players ready to take some of the most well-known entertainment brands in the country to the next level.CP24 is looking for a digital journalist to help drive the online platforms of Toronto’s fastest-paced newsroom. We want an experienced writer who thrives in a live, breaking news environment. Writing quickly and correctly is essential to the job, as is strong news judgement. The successful candidate is fluent in social media, understands the power of video, and is excited about finding new ways to tell stories.Responsibilities:

  • You will be responsible for at least 5-7 news stories a day, updating them with the latest information
  • This will include writing, capturing and editing video, and using images that come into the newsroom
  • Ensure the accuracy, consistency and adherence to standards of all material on the website (headlines, photos, captions, video, etc.)
  • Work will include visualizations in infographics, maps, timelines and data journalism
  • Monitoring and publishing wires, while keeping SEO, keywords and social sharing top of mind
  • Managing multiple social media streams for news (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and others) and when required, sending news alerts to mobile apps
  • Pitch ideas for original reporting
  • Weekend and early morning/late evening shifts as assigned
  • Communicating and sharing information with the rest of the newsroom
  • Keep on top of trends and the latest digital innovations
Qualifications:
  • Degree in Journalism
  • Must have an excellent command of the English language and an ability to write accurate and engaging headlines
  • Capable of turning complex issues into clear, concise copy under tremendous deadline pressures
  • Must be familiar with Canadian Press Style Guide and Canadian libel law
  • Knowledge of content management systems, Adobe Photoshop and other applications in the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience copy editing and proofreading written content
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years journalism experience in a digital news operation
  • Experience with video editing and television production is an asset
  • Familiarity with newsroom management systems (e.g. iNews) and video encoding/format transferring is an asset
  • An understanding of Toronto and the GTA, their communities and politics
  • An attitude that acknowledges the news industry continues to evolve and a demonstrated buy-in of modern news gathering and delivery techniques
  • Portfolio of online journalism that includes samples of at least three items from the following: breaking news writing, political or business analysis, social breaking news, data visualization, interactive storytelling
