Job Description

BRANCH: Wildlife & SciencePOSITION: Seasonal Wetland Conservation AssistantHOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week (evening, weekend, and shift work required)POSITION DURATION: 12 weeksPAY RATE: $14.25/hrBASIC FUNCTION: The Toronto Zoo is seeking a candidate to fill a position as Wetland ConservationSeasonal Assistant during the summer of 2021, this position is grant funded. The successful candidatewill be part of the Adopt-A-Pond Wetland Conservation Program, which focuses on the conservation ofwetlands and the reptiles and amphibians that live within. Responsibilities include turtle husbandry,stewardship activities, and monitoring of reptiles and amphibians. The successful candidates will assistwith Species at Risk recovery through field research and partner projects to restore habitat, and willrespond to public inquiries about Zoo conservation projects. The candidate will work in a teamenvironment with multiple conservation initiatives. This position will also assist and provide support inimplementing the approved Strategic Plan.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the care of threatened reptile and amphibian species in the Zoo’s collection
  • Assist with public correspondence, database management, and resource production for the
Toronto Zoo's Ontario Turtle Tally and FrogWatch Ontario citizen science monitoring programs
  • Assist with development and delivery of programming and educational materials
  • Assist with the organization and planning of events at the Toronto Zoo and in the community
including World Turtle Weekend celebrations
  • Assist with field work: radio-tracking and monitoring of reptiles and amphibians
  • Assist with maintaining monitoring data and maps to track turtle movement in the Rouge National
Urban Park and communicate this information effectively to staff members and external partnersthrough reports and presentations
  • Assist with field work utilizing vegetation and wetland identification skills to classify and evaluate
Species at Risk habitat (specifically for Western Chorus Frogs and Massasauga Rattlesnakes)
  • Assist with habitat restoration projects for Species at Risk (e.g., pond rehabilitation, turtle nesting
site construction projects, snake hibernacula, etc.)
  • Create articles on conservation projects and noteworthy events for social media
  • Other related duties as requested by the Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completed or working towards a degree in biology, environmental science, natural resource
management, restoration ecology, wildlife conservation, or related field
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to travel and work vocational weekends and evenings as required
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (grant requirement)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in
Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (grant requirement)
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation
and regulations. International participants are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they areCanadian citizens or permanent residents (grant requirement)
  • Comfortable working outdoors and experience wearing and working in chest waders (asset)
  • Outreach experience, especially experience with environmental education (asset)
  • Experience with wetland evaluation and/or wetland plant identification (asset)
  • Some understanding or interest in reptile and amphibian biology (asset)
  • Experience with wildlife research in the field and wildlife care/handling, especially with turtles or
snakes (asset)
  • Proficiency with computer software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint (GIS software and Photoshop an
asset)
  • Excellent English verbal and written abilities; proficiency in other languages (asset)
  • Full G Ontario Driver’s License and daily use of a car (note that work-related mileage will be
