Job Description

OUR STORYFor more than 35 years, Bardel Entertainment has led the animation industry through unwavering commitment to quality, creativity, and innovation. We are an internationally recognized, Emmy Award®-winning studio – in two prominent Canadian cities, Vancouver and Montreal – and the creative force behind top audience hits such as The Dragon Prince, Rick and Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We are looking for a versatile CG Generalist to join our small but mighty development team working closely with our Head of Visual Development and Head of CG. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in early-stage creative exploration and enjoys wearing multiple hats across the 3D pipeline—with a strong emphasis on Surfacing, Lookdev, DMP, Lighting, and Compositing. RequirementsWhat You’ll Do: Core responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with a small, fast-moving team to define and evolve the visual style of development projects.
  • Create high-quality textures, stylized shaders, and materials (especially non-photorealistic looks like toon-shading) for characters, props, and environments.
  • Handle look development, matte painting, lighting setups, and compositing to create visually compelling shots in Blender and Nuke.
  • Partner with designers and fellow artists to maintain a cohesive and consistent visual language across assets and scenes.
  • Jump between departments as needed—this may include modeling, previs, or basic rigging—while staying focused on the big visual picture.
  • Embrace an “all-in-Blender” approach, completing tasks across the pipeline within a unified workflow.
Collaborationamp; Workflow:
  • Collaborate with leadership, production, and team members to solve problems and share insights.
  • Engage in dailies, rounds, and team discussions to contribute to creative and technical improvements.
  • Adhere to pipeline workflows and technical requirements for seamless integration into the production process.
  • For senior artists, actively mentor junior team members by providing constructive feedback, guidance, and support.
Time Managementamp; Communication:
  • Maintain consistency in quality while meeting production needs.
  • Manage time effectively, working with production to stay on schedule.
  • Keep the team and production staff informed about progress, challenges, and solutions.
What You’ll Bring: Experience:
  • Previous production experience as a Surfacing/LookDev Artist (or similar) in animation.
  • A well-rounded understanding of other departments (modeling, rigging, layout, etc.), even if your strengths lie in surfacing and lighting.
  • Understanding of industry-standard workflows, UV layouts, and optimization.
Skillsamp; Communication:
  • Strong experience with Blender (professional or as a hobby)—this is non-negotiable. You should be able to hit the ground running.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively promote solutions, share knowledge, and incorporate feedback.
  • A proactive attitude and flexibility to take on whatever task is needed—big or small—with enthusiasm and ownership.
  • Technical aptitude and a creative mindset, able to troubleshoot and problem-solve when working across the CG pipeline.
Portfolio Requirements:
  • A solid reel showcasing non-photorealistic work (e.g., toon-shading, stylized rendering).
  • A high level of detail and surfacing craftsmanship across a diverse range of characters and environments, with a preference for stylized work using Blender.
  • Strong eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating materials and textures.
  • Ability to create textures from reference.
