We are currently seeking applications for full time seasonal Grader Prep Laborer / Occasional Grader Operators.We currently employ approximately 25 staff, servicing municipal, commercial, residential and provincial paving markets. Vernon Paving is a Union company that offers employee benefits and competitive wages ranging from $27-$30/hour depending on experience. We offer a safe work environment, on the job training, up to date well-kept equipment and room for advancement. These positions are based out of our Armstrong location and work sites are throughout the North Okanagan.Reporting to the Superintendent, the employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operations of grade preparation including the use of hand tools, plate tampers, up to occasional use of motorized roller compactors and Bobcat skidsteers. The employee performs rough or fine grade finishing; precisely spreading and mixing materials in order to prep roads, parking lots, and construct road surfaces to precise grade specifications.Responsibilities:

  • Operate hand tools and any equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Perform daily pre-trip/maintenance and safety checks of equipment when required
  • Help set up safe work zones with necessary signs and / or barricades as required
  • Demonstrate an understanding of grades and interpret roadway plans and drawings
  • Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required
  • Work with other shop or field personnel
  • Act in a courteous manner in order to project a positive company image
  • Assist with other duties as required from time to time
Qualifications:
  • Willing to learn and take direction
  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers, customers, and superintendents.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a preference given to those holding a class 3 with air, or higher
  • Must be able to work under pressure in a high paced environment
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies
  • Multi-task and set priorities effectively
  • Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination
  • Maintain a high level of Housekeeping
  • Previous experience using any survey / GPS equipment would be considered an asset
  • Be physically fit and able to perform physical work in various outdoor weather conditions
Experience/Education
  • Experience within the road construction industry would be considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license as well as a clean drivers abstract
Working Conditions
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Work overtime and weekends as required
  • Arrive on time, fit for work and remain fit for work throughout the shift
