Job Description

Company DescriptionLove what you do:PRT is the largest commercial-scale containerized growing provider in North America for a wide range of forestry seedling species. Be part of a team of people that grows trees for our future forests! PRT has capacity to grow and sell more than 335 million baby trees annually, across its 19 nursery locations, in 4 provinces and 4 states.Job DescriptionPosition Summary: As a key member of the nursery grow team, the Irrigation Specialist will assist in the growing of tree seedlings used for reforestation. This role is suited for someone wanting to start a career as a grower and may provide several opportunities to do so within PRT. Training and education are available within PRT’s structure to help develop the right candidate towards their goals.This is a seasonal position with work from approximately April to late August each year. Other projects are available to join for the remaining of the year; October to December.Tasks involved while working under the direction of the nursery growers the main job functions in this role include but are not limited to:

  • Mixing fertilizers and checking EC readings before and after irrigations
  • Unplugging sprinkler nozzles and changing irrigation filters
  • Taking daily block weights while scouting for pests and diseases
  • Monitoring and measuring crop growth rates and conducting audits on lifted crops
  • Using computer systems to adjust watering cycles and climate settings
  • Minor repairs to irrigation systems.
  • Assist in herbicide and other pesticide applications
  • Assist in Greenhouse sanitization practices
  • Maintenance and other nursery work will be required from time to time.
  • Accurate record keeping and data entry into spreadsheets
QualificationsKnowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Must be reliable and have transportation - no public transit is available
  • Shift work and weekend work is required – regular hours are 37.5 per week with varying shift times by grow season
  • Work is in greenhouses and outdoors with exposure to temperature extremes at times
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete in house online training courses and may be required to obtain a pesticide applicator certificate
  • Relevant forest seedling nursery experience is useful, however, not essential
