Job Description

As a Language Administrator you will oversee all technical support related to OKIB’s computer-based language learning programs. These two programs are technical in nature and require close attention to detail and ongoing technical support for users and teachers.In addition, the Language Administrator is responsible for all technical aspects related to gathering, researching, and archiving audio/visual materials that support the preservation on the nsqilxcn language and culture.WHAT WE OFFERThe OKIB offers a welcoming team environment and a rewarding job experience as you join us in providing services to the Okanagan Indian Band. SUPPORTS NEEDED
  • Set-up and conduct interviews with Fluent speakers
  • Seek-out innovative research methods focused on conserving cultural heritage
  • Recording, editing and uploading oral language interviews
  • Deliver language program presentations to community as requested
  • Classify, code, cross reference, log, and store all language and cultural records
  • Maintain access lists for security classified records
  • Gather, process and catalogue audio/video media for digitization and archiving
  • Digitize media from a variety of formats; VHS, DVD and DV family, audio cassettes etc.
  • Manage completed digitized files
  • Participates in community events as needed
  • Coordinates and supports the Elders Advisory Group and Language and Culture Committee on language and culture
  • Maintain a positive role model for practicing language and culture
  • Participate in staff nsqilxcn language classes
  • Work closely with external organizations to support proper language and place translations.
  • Transports Elders/Knowledge Keepers to language meetings and cultural events, when necessary
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
  • Perform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONSEducation You have education, experience, or carry a willingness to learn. You are community-minded, detail-oriented, and an excellent communicator.
  • Library Archivist or related technical diploma preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of the Okanagan Language and Culture
  • Knowledge in computer programs including MS Office, Audacity, Final Cut Pro, Adobe and CKK
  • Preference for CAN8 Technical Training or willing to obtain
Experience
  • Experience recording with working with fluent speakers, especially Elders.
  • Research experience
  • Database management and archivist experience
  • Knowledge and experience in Okanagan language and culture
  • Committed nsqilxcn language learner
