  • Supervise, train and develop staff of the Sustainability and Climate Change team.
  • Lead Whitby’s sustainability, climate change and energy management initiatives, policies, procedures and monitor the Town’s progress.
  • Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of the key sustainability related strategic initiatives, including the Corporate Sustainability Plan and the Climate Change Plan.
  • Supervise the implementation and monitoring of the Corporate Energy and Emissions Management Plan, including energy management initiatives.
  • Provide professional advice to council, the senior leadership team and across the corporation.
  • Facilitate and build capacity for improved municipal operations regarding sustainability and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
  • Represent the Town on various forums and collaborate with all levels of government, industry, education, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to develop and provide input and implementation of common strategies and objectives related to sustainability.
What You Bring To Our Team
  • University degree in a Planning, Environmental Management, Environmental Studies, Sustainability or related discipline
  • Strong knowledge and in-depth technical understanding of sustainability and best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and provincial policies and legislation on climate change.
  • One or more of the following professional qualifications/certifications/designations is preferred:A minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience with progressive responsibility including supervision of staff.
    • Registered Professional Planner (RPP);
    • Environmental Professional;
    • International Society of Sustainability Professionals;
    • Certified Sustainability Professional;
    • LEED Professional Credentials (LEED Accredited Professional)
  • Research and analytical skills required to understand the science of climate change and the principals of sustainability.
  • Project management skills including terms of reference, managing staff and consultants, monitor project status; while achieving assigned deadlines and remaining within stipulated budgets.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to provide advice and leadership to all stakeholders in relation to areas such as sustainability and climate change.
  • Ability to analyse using environmental design processes such as LEED and/or building industry standards in making recommendations.
  • Ability to balance multiple objectives, identify urgencies and importance of each project.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to establish and enhance working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Possess the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Intermediate level of computer proficiency using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
