Job Description

This is a full time TERM position available until November 1, 2024 (with possibility of extension), working 75 hours bi-weekly. This competition may be used to fill similar term or permanent positions should they become available.Our roleThe Water Resources Branch works with diverse partners to protect water for the environment and people. We do so by building knowledge generated from our many water monitoring networks, undertaking research and targeted projects and by applying our learnings in the development of plans, policies and by providing expertise through Yukon’s regulatory process and through issuing flood forecasts. We are a committed, collaborative and engaged group of professionals who take pride in water stewardship for all Yukoners.Your roleThe Hydrologist strengthens the resiliency of the Yukon government’s flood forecasting and monitoring program through the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of the hydrology program for Yukon.   • Degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering, or related scientific discipline with a focus on Physical Hydrology and/or Water Resources Engineering
  • Experience in ice breakup and streamflow forecasting and/or modelling
  • Experience communicating technical information in the form of briefings, information to media, and/or reporting to a wide variety of audiences
  • Experience with hydrometeorological data processing and management
  • Experience operating/maintaining meteorological or hydrological monitoring networks and/or monitoring stations in remote locations
Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.Desired Knowledge, Skills and SuitabilityCandidates should have and may be assessed on:
  • Sound academic knowledge of meteorological and hydrological processes in cold regions
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer applications for the management of environmental data
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build partnerships with a broad range of internal and external partners
  • Interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills to build effective relationships
  • Planning, scheduling and time management skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving ability
