Employer: Legal Help CentrePosition: 0.8FTE, 25-30 hours/weekABOUT THE LEGAL HELP CENTRELegal Help Centre of Winnipeg Inc. (LHC) is a charitable organization that provides free legal and social resources to lower-income individuals. LHC also offers practical experience to university students as they prepare for careers in legal and community service. Their goal is to provide accessible services, improve access to justice, and respond to community needs. At Legal Help Centre, they recognize that legal problems often intersect with social and economic issues. They know that dealing with a legal issue can impact a person’s life in many ways – legally, financially, emotionally, and even physically. That is why they use an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. They host students from the faculties of law, social work, conflict resolution, and criminal justice and, if an individual has other concerns related to their legal problem, they work together to try to assist by providing information, support, and helpful referrals.Legal Help Centre works together with a variety of community organizations to help individuals deal with the complex dilemmas they face. They can refer a client to another agency that is better suited to help them with some part of their problem. They can cooperate with others to improve an individual’s involvement in the legal process, enhance the information provided to the public, and empower people to deal with their legal matters. They can create opportunities for students to get practical experience and develop skills that will help them be successful in a career of helping others. As a signatory to Winnipeg #39;s Indigenous Accord, LHC is committed to a continuing responsibility towards Truth and Reconciliation and furthering its relationships with Indigenous communities.ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORReporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide leadership for all Legal Help Centre’s (LHC) operations and foster effective teamwork with the board and staff. They will ensure LHC meets all the requirements of the Law Society of Manitoba and that the programs and services contribute to LHC’s mission and organizational priorities. As the Executive Director, you will be leading a team in a collaborative and resourceful environment that values the diversity of the people it hires and serves. The Executive Director will act as a spokesperson and ambassador for the non-profit organization. KEY LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIESLeadership and Operational Management Participate with the Board of Directors in developing and implementing a strategic plan to guide the organizationFoster effective teamwork with the Board and staffEnsure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its clients, Board, and fundersOversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organizationWith the Legal Director, draft operational policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the policiesReview existing policies on a regular basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriateEnsure all the requirements of the Law Society of Manitoba are met for the management of a law officeEnsure that the organization complies with all legislation covering charities and taxationEnsure that personnel, client, donor, and volunteer files are securely stored, and confidentiality is maintainedFinancial Planning and ManagementPrepare, and comply with, annual budgets and ensure appropriate financial managementWork with the Treasurer to draft a comprehensive annual budget for Board review and approvalOversee and monitor bookkeeping and accounting, ensuring that sound procedures are followedEnsure the funds of the organization are expended according to the approved budgetOversee the monthly cash flow of the organization and approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the BoardProvide comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization to the Board and speak to the reports when necessaryIdentify and evaluate the risks to the organization #39;s people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks and implement controls to mitigate the risksEnsure that the Board of Directors and LHC carry appropriate and adequate insurance coverage and inform the Board of the terms, conditions, and limitations of the insurance coverageWorking with the Board, secure adequate funding for the operation of LHC by researching funding sources, overseeing the development of fundraising plans, preparing funding proposals, and preparing reports for existing fundersProgram Planning and ManagementProvide advice and guidance in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization #39;s programs and services, including on- and off-site clinics, community outreach, and any other programs and projects that may be developedEnsure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization #39;s mission and reflect the priorities of the BoardParticipate in the orientation of students and volunteers, as appropriate, and assist in the development of orientation and training manualsMonitor the day-to-day delivery of programs and services to maintain or improve qualityProvide guidance to the Legal Director as they direct and oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projectsHuman Resources Planning and ManagementOversee human resource management by ensuring staff resources and policies are in placeOversee the implementation of LHC’s human resources policies, procedures, and practicesDetermine staffing requirements and recruit staff for organizational needs and program deliveryCoordinate all staff and ensure they receive an orientation to the organization and appropriate trainingMaintain a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulationsMonitor the performance of staff on an ongoing basis and conduct regular performance appraisals as per the LHC’s policiesCoach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve and motivate performanceBoard Support and Community RelationsIdentify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization and all aspects of the organization #39;s activitiesAct as a spokesperson and ambassador for the organization and advocate the legal needs of clients in the community to inform, energize, and motivate law reformCommunicate with stakeholders in the legal and social work professions to keep them informed of the work of the organization and of the needs and changes within the community LHC servesEstablish good working relationships and partnerships with community groups, public interest legal organizations, the legal community, the University community, funders, politicians, and other stakeholders and entities to help achieve the goals of the organizationRepresent LHC at community meetings and networking events to promote the LHC, give presentations to community leaders and organizations to inform them about LHC’s programs and servicesEDUCATIONamp; EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree in law, social work, public administration or a related discipline, paired with experience in the administration and management of a non-profit organization, including program coordination and evaluation, fundraising, human resources, and community development.The Executive Director will ideally make themselves available 25-30 hours per week (0.8 FTE) and will work at LHC’s offices and/or remotely as is appropriate. The Executive Director is expected to attend meetings of the Board of Directors and its committees. Knowledge of current community challenges, issues, and opportunities relating to LHC’s mandateKnowledge of justice systems and the legal communityKnowledge of the communities we serve, including Indigenous peoples and newcomer communitiesDemonstrated skills in leadership, organization, and teamworkStrong communication and relationship-building skills, especially in a community-based environmentExperience in/ability to manage limited resources, fundraise, and oversee financial aspects of an organizationExperience in/capacity for human resource management with respect to staff and volunteersExperience in/capacity to develop and manage projects, with a focus on client and community needsExperience in/capacity to engage in risk management for a non-profit organizationExperience in/ability to provide guidance and mentorship to staff and volunteersAdaptability, flexibility, innovation and creativityAbility to solve problems and think strategically.
