Job Description

Job Summary:Reporting to the Vice-Provost, Academic, the Associate Vice-President Indigenous Affairs (AVP IA) will lead UFV in achieving the strategic vision of Lálém ye mestíyexw, or “House of the Peoples.” As translated from the Halqeméylem, Lálém ye mestíyexw provides a home for Indigenization in which people come together to strengthen their presence and relationships and presents a structure that will allow UFV to fully embrace our commitment to Reconciliation, Decolonization, Indigenizing Our Academy, and improving our ability to be both responsive and responsible to Indigenous peoples’ goals for self-determination and well-being.The AVP IA will be guided by Sto: lo s’iwes ensuring university processes infuse Indigenous knowledges in all that we do at the university. Embedding Indigenous Leadership in the university is integral to the goals of Indigenizing Our Academy. The AVP IA position is embedded within the body of the institution, working collaboratively across all campuses, with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop relationships and ensure effective education and service for Indigenous learners. Working together with a council of Elders/leaders, the AVP IA will guide Indigenizing Our Academy and its intricacies.The AVP IA will provide key leadership and direction in partnership with the university’s other senior leaders, in the discussions, strategic planning, and decision making on UFV’s efforts towards truth and reconciliation. At time, the AVP IA will also provide senior administrators advice and guidance on how UFV can work towards decolonizing and Indigenizing the university’s structure through community partnerships, and the building of Lálém ye mestíyexw. The AVP IA also plays a key leadership role in responding to requests for proposals for Indigenous funding initiatives in collaboration with our First Nations partners.For more information, see Position Description link above.Qualifications:Master’s degree required (in Indigenous studies, Indigenous education, or a related field); PhD degree preferred.Extensive knowledge and direct lived experience in Indigenous ways of knowing and worldviews, Indigenous protocols, and community engagement, particularly from a Stó: lo worldview.An entrenched understanding of a distinctions-based approach to Indigenous relationships and engagement.Extensive experience working with and partnering with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.Intricate knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, UNDRIP and relevant Federal and Provincial reports, programs and grant opportunities that are relevant to the post-secondary sector.The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships grounded in Reciprocity, Respect, Relevance and Responsibility, with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers, and leaders.A minimum of ten (10) years of related Indigenous education experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment (academic administrative practices).Proven ability to oversee the management of financial reports/budgets and timelines.Proven ability to work with minimal or no supervision, and with conflicting priorities.Familiarity with UFV Faculties, programs, policies, and procedures.Must be of Indigenous ancestry, Stó: lo preferred.Expertise and knowledge of the political, legislative, and governing bodies pertaining to Indigenous initiatives at a local, provincial, and national level.About UFV:The University of the Fraser Valley is located on the traditional territory of the Halqeméylem-speaking peoples.
