Scientific Technical Officer 11*Durations may vary from 2-5 months, commencing in April 2023$27.6884 – $33.1767 hourly** The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) is an independent, non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors with a mandate to provide hatchery and related fisheries management services to various clients and partners including the Province of BC, other jurisdictions, First Nations, Crown Corporations, Community Associations and the private sector.We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Junior Fish Culture Technicians to join our Operations Division in various locations which may include the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbotsford, the Clearwater Trout Hatchery in Clearwater, the Kootenay Trout Hatchery in Fort Steele, the Summerland Trout Hatchery in Summerland, the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery in Duncan, and the Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre in Vanderhoof. Seasonal opportunities will vary in duration from 2 to 5 months commencing in April 2023.Under the general supervision of the Assistant Hatchery Manager or a Senior Fish Culturist, the Junior Seasonal Fish Culturist is responsible for carrying out fish culture activities required for egg collection, propagation and distribution of fish. Specific responsibilities include the following:1. Operate and maintain remote broodstock capture, holding and egg collection stations by:a. measuring, weighing and identifying fish species captured by seine, gill net, trap net, angling, electroshocking or stationary trapb. protecting brood capture facilities from predators and vandalismc. maintaining records for the egg collection stationd. operating and maintaining electronic fish counting devices, pumps, generatorse. under supervision, collecting eggs using appropriate techniques, disinfecting eggs and transporting eggs to the hatchery2. Carry out incubation and rearing activities within the hatchery operation using appropriate fish culture techniques by:a. removing and recording dead eggs, and fish mortalities during incubation and rearingb. feeding fish by operating and maintaining electronic, mechanical and hand feeding systemsc. cleaning and disinfecting facilities and equipmentd. conducting sample counts to determine fish size and inventorye. grading fish by size or stage of development, and marking fish by fin clippingf. monitoring water flows, temperatures and water qualityg. protecting reared fish from predators and vandals3. Transfer and distribute fish into lakes and streams designated by Fisheries Biologists by:a. disinfecting fish culture equipment, trucks and tanks using appropriate techniquesb. working with a senior fish culturist as part of a team in the transport and distribution of fish4. Perform other related duties as required.Qualifications - The successful candidate must be enrolled in, or a graduate from, a fish culture or technical fisheries resource management program or other related field. Preference may be given to candidates with fisheries related programs and/or related experience. A current driver’s licence is required. Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card preferred for some locations.
