POSITION PURPOSE:Leads the nursery seedling growing operation for the production of seedlings to support the Company’s long-term silviculture program. Leads the implementation of the tree improvement program.CUSTOMER/EMPLOYEE/COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONSEstablishes and maintains a close working relationship with customers to ensure the production and delivery of high-quality seedlings for company operations and external sales. Develops and maintains strong working relations with government and private agencies as well as regional and provincial tree improvement initiatives.SCOPEThe incumbent reports to the Woodlands Manager and plans, directs, and co-ordinates all activities of the Company greenhouse nursery operation and tree improvement program. Implements safety programs to ensure the safety of employees. Assures compliance to operating procedures, federal, provincial, and municipal regulations. Co-ordinates with the Silviculture Supervisor to plan the requirements for the Company’s reforestation program. Co-ordinates with Woodlands Manager to plan requirements for external sales. Establishes and implements short- to mid-term plan activities directed towards sustained continuous improvement while maintaining production and quality schedules within established procedures and budgets. Hires, trains, and motivates employees to ensure the consistent attainment of production schedules at cost levels.QUALIFICATIONSThis position requires a bachelor’s degree or diploma in horticulture, agriculture, or forestry with three to five years’ experience in greenhouse production and nursery operations. A combination of formal training and relevant experience will also be considered. The incumbent should be a hands- on self-motivated individual who is a team player with good communication skills, strong organizing and planning skills , well developed problem solving and decision making skills, with a focus achieving results.DIMENSIONSSeedling Production - 5 to 8 million seedlings/yearEmployees - 15-25 seasonal hourly employeesPRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
