Job Description

Youth Haven Outreach Counsellor Job Description Responsibilities/Expectations: As an Outreach Counsellor, you are required to perform and abide by the following duties, responsibilities and expectations in a professional manner:· Identifying clients needs by completing intake process and assessment forms· Help facilitate the process of connecting clients with appropriate resources to support identified mental health needs· Assisting clients with accessing community resources to meet basic needs such as Ontario Works, Housing, Food banks etc…· Support clients in navigating through various supports/resources within the community which are applicable to their case· Supporting and meeting clients where they are as identified by client. Acknowledging differences in needs of clients and accepting without bias the issues raised by clients· Providing counselling support to clients on an ongoing and consistent basis and ensuring accountability· Providing appropriate counselling support including abiding by standard ethics such as setting appropriate boundaries with clients to avoid codependent relationships, ensuring clients understand limitations of counselling relationship, being clear about parameters of disclosure such as duty to report· Developing and implementing safety plans with clients as necessary· Providing various workshops to clients identifying with certain mental health related issues such as anger management, substance use, self-esteem etc…· Applying best practice models for counselling· Ability and willingness to de-escalate crisis situations· Ability to work flexible/unstructured hours· Establishing a relationship of trust and respect with clients· Actively listening to client concerns and demonstrating empathy to their position· Guiding clients to a deeper understanding of their concerns through counselling· Attending therapeutic outings with clients as well as support related outings as appropriate (eg. Court support, CAS meetings, etc…)· Attending community and/or committee meetings as applicable· Attending supervision and training courses as required including but not limited to SPDAT training, CPR/First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, ASIST· Liaising, as necessary, with other agencies and individuals to better support client· Keeping records and using reporting tools including but not limited to detailed case notes upon completion of each counselling session or client interaction/ interaction with other agencies/individuals connected with client, monthly stats, incident reports, weekly employee progress reports etc…· Maintaining communication with supervisor on an ongoing basis. Advising supervisor before/after outreach calls including location and nature of meeting· Attending staff meetings and individual quarterly meetings· Travelling limit per month of 340 kilometers, unless approved in writing by supervisor. Responsible for tracking and submitting personal mileage.· Responsible for insuring vehicle for work purposes. Providing Youth Haven with a copy of this policy· Providing support for youth ages 16-24 within the community as well as parents/caregivers of youth and family support· Maintaining ongoing communication to management and abiding by safety protocols· Understanding personal limitations and being accountable in recognizing and communicating any limitations with supervisor (eg. Difficulties that may arise with clients, personal triggers hindering work with client etc..)· Participating in outreach work as established by organization including but not limited to outreach walks, drop ins at various locations in community (schools, libraries, community events etc..)· Facilitating group counselling sessions or workshops as needed· Responsible for maintaining good care of Youth Haven equipment (cell phone/laptop)· Maintaining a clean and organized office spaceQualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in Social Work or related field (i.e social services, health or education)
  • Good knowledge of counselling techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of the problems of the chronically mentally ill.
  • Knowledge of human behavior.
  • Working knowledge of community resources and how to access them.
  • Good knowledge of counselling and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to relate well with people.
  • Ability to deal confidently with other service providers.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • Access to a vehicle.
  • Bilingual an asset.
Job Type: Full-timeSalary: From $36,000.00 per yearSchedule:
  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability
Ability to commute/relocate:
  • Midland, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
