This vision informs our day-to-day operations and provides a philosophy that revolves around person-focused supports, strength-based approaches, and community-oriented learning opportunities.Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centers. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support.CAMP COORDINATORTerm: Full-time, seasonal, approx. 35-40 hours per week. (Flexibility required)Start Date: 10 weeks starting June 20th,2022 - August 26th, 2022Position location: Amherst, NSSalary: TBDApplication deadline: 4:30 pm, June 3, 2022What you’ll be doing…The Cumberland Summer Camp is a recreation program for children and youth on the autism spectrum between the ages of 4-15 years. Each camper is supported with a low camper/counsellor ratio and activities are designed specifically with participants’ needs and interests in mind.The Camp Coordinator is responsible for running and facilitating the camp under the supervision of the Camp Director. The Camp Coordinator reports to the Camp Director and speaks for the camp in the Camp Director and Program Directors absence.What we’re looking for…A passionate, team player who takes personal accountability to deliver on what is expected in their role and who strives for excellence every day.   • A University degree or student in a related post-secondary program (preferably in education, recreation, social work, psychology, etc.) or equivalent experience accepted
  • A clear, current Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Check is required
  • Up to date First Aid and CPR Certification is required
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification or willingness to acquire is considered an asset
Minimum experience:
  • A great deal of knowledge and experience working with individuals with autism
  • Knowledge and experience supervising and managing a team
  • Knowledge and experience in planning and facilitating recreation-based activities
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Word and Excel as well as the ability to learn basic software quickly
Minimum skills and ability:
  • Ability to effectively work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently
  • Strong computer skills & knowledge of social media strategy and tactics is essential
  • Resourcefulness in solving problems and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Excellent people skills with an upbeat and enthusiastic attitude
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical skills and keen attention to detail
  • High level of professionalism and judgment

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to be on your feet for long periods of time at summer camp. Including running and strenuous activity
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • To adhere to policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Autism Nova Scotia Employee package
  • Work with the Chapter Navigator, to plan/organize the program schedule and counsellor training week
  • To document the steps involved in planning the summer program
  • To contact organizations to book dates for outings, as required
  • To organize the structure of each day’s programming, and to implement and oversee daily activities as per program schedule
  • To manage volunteers, if required
  • To work directly with children, youth, and adults on the spectrum, ensuring all participants are treated with dignity and respect, and that the health and safety needs of each participant are met at all times
  • To administer any medications required by participants as per instructions given by parents/physician
  • To mentor and support staff
  • To ensure good communication with staff, parents, and participants regarding program activities
  • To ensure program facilities are clean and orderly
  • To adhere strictly to all current Public Health & Safety protocols throughout the duration of the program
  • To follow-up after the completion of the program with reorganization of supplies and final reporting/documentation
  • Other duties as required
Essential and Other Related Job Duties:
  • A valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule
As a Proof of Vaccination organization, all Autism Nova Scotia staff are required to be fully vaccinated. Those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical, religious, or cultural reasons must wear a mask at all times, practice social distancing, and sanitize their hands upon entry while inside Autism Nova Scotia offices or community program spaces.
