We are recognized as a centre of excellence in the geomatics community and are considered the premier mapping and geographic information source for Nova Scotia.About Our OpportunityThe Geomatics Database Analyst will be a member of a team that supports geographic data, storage, and workflows. The Geomatics Database Analyst works closely with the Senior GIS Data Architect and geographic data custodians in provincial departments and agencies to ensure that geographic information is available to clients and partners from a secure and central location.Under the general direction of the Senior GIS Data Architect, the Geomatics Database Analyst is a highly skilled, experienced, detail-oriented geomatics professional who demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of GIS concepts and is innovative in mapping technologies, relational databases, geographic data analysis tools and methodologies. This role has responsibility for the storage and delivery of provincial geographic datasets to a vast array of clients using the most up to date technologies available in the industry. The successful candidate may interact with and provide training and support to many clients and partners.Primary AccountabilitiesThe Geomatics Database Analyst is responsible for the following:

  • Database design of geographic data for clients
  • Administer geographic databases and access to data, services, and applications
  • Work with clients to determine best approach for storing and delivering/access of geographic data
  • Upload and onboard datasets, map / feature services into government’s Spatial Data Infrastructure
  • Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of standards, procedures, and guidelines for government’s Spatial Data Infrastructure
  • Support geographic database needs for clients across government
  • Resolves technical challenges for accessing geographic data
  • Research and development of new products or new technology to improve services
Qualifications and ExperienceThe successful candidate must have one of the following education/professional experience levels:Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Geomatics field plus 5 years related experience or graduation from an approved technical school in the field of geomatics plus 8 years related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.The ideal candidate will have knowledge and/or experience in the following:
  • Geographic Information Systems, database software, database design, and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Data storage
  • GIS services (for e.g., map, feature, etc.)
  • Prioritizing, assigning, scheduling, and monitoring tasks
  • Working with other staff and partners to improve the design, maintenance, and quality assurance of geographic data
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to participate in a team environment while building and maintaining relationships with a variety of partners
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude, attention to detail, and problem solving
Other considerations:The following would be considered an asset:
  • Experience with Nova Scotia GIS data
  • Experience with FME (data integration platform) software
  • Experience with linear referencing
  • Experience geocoding
