Housing Nova Scotia (HNS) is working to advance the objectives of the National Housing Strategy and has developed a 3-year Action Plan. HNS is the provincial government agency responsible for the administration and delivery of affordable housing solutions for low-to modest income Nova Scotians. Through its five regional Housing Authorities, HNS provides more than 11,500 safe, affordable homes as part of its Public Housing program to more than 17,000 seniors and families. Housing Authorities manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s public housing stock.About Our OpportunityUnder the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Person is responsible for carrying out material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs, and servicing in the following areas – carpentry, plumbing, heating, basic electrical, painting, ventilation, on properties, under the jurisdiction of Cobequid Housing Authority (CHA).Primary Accountabilities

  • Carry out assessment and preventative maintenance to all assigned CHA buildings, appliances, fixtures, utilities, and equipment in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain properties under the jurisdiction of the Housing Authority, including walks, driveways and parking areas, drainage systems, curbs and gutters, swales, culverts, manholes, catch basins, etc.
  • Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
  • Repair vacant units to make them rent-ready.
  • Operate motor vehicles, motorized equipment and power tools used in the trade.
  • Respond to after-hours maintenance calls while participating on the standby duty roster.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years’ experience in building and property maintenance or a related field. Must be able to perform basic tasks in carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting and drywall.
  • Ability to operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks using good body mechanics.
  • Knowledge of residential building technology, basic knowledge of National Building Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.
Assets
  • First Aid, WHMIS.
  • Knowledge of computer systems is beneficial.
