For over 35 years, Umbrella Family and Child Centres of Hamilton has offered high-quality programs to young children and their families. We operate full-day early learning and childcare centres for infant, toddler and preschool children, as well as extended-day programs before and after school for kindergarten and school age children in over 27 locations throughout the Greater Hamilton Area.We pride ourselves on being a leading childcare organization, committed to high quality programs that are inclusive, accessible, and promote learning and growth.Who are we Looking ForWe are looking for a Cook to compliment our team!Reporting to the Program Supervisor, the cook is responsible for menu planning, purchasing of groceries and supplies and daily preparation of nutritious meals and snacks served to the children enrolled in the centre.This position will be at our Ancaster Meadow centre and working 25 hours per week. Pay: $17.61What are we Looking ForTo be considered for this role, the right candidate will have the following qualifications:Experience:
  • Minimum 1-year experience working in a kitchen setting
  • Experience with menu planning and purchasing
  • Experience in a childcare setting a definite asset
Education:College level Certificate or Diploma in a related field, Working knowledge of the Canada Food GuideCertifications
  • Valid Food Handler’s certificate
  • Standard First Aid with CPR level C
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
  • Proof of up to date immunization
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccinations
  • Valid Driver’s license
Skills:
  • Physically capable of lifting and handling groceries
  • Able to drive to purchase groceries

  • Excellent problem solving, interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced

What will you be doingYou will work in consultation with the Program Supervisor to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen and its coordination with the other programs of the centre.The successful candidate will:
  • Plan lunch menus and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide
  • Post menus for parents and staff
  • Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen is organized, clean, safe and hygienic condition at all times.
  • Deliver and collect lunch/snack trays to and from all on-site programs
  • Meets with the Public Health Inspector as required and ensure the kitchen and practices follow the City of Hamilton’s health code
  • Order and purchase groceries in order to implement the planned menus
  • When required, supervise children, scanning the area routinely to ensure safety, and recognize potentially hazardous situations so that they may be prevented. This may be required during lunch time or the beginning of the day
