Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the educational needs of approximately 17,125 students in 43 schools. This position includes 22 hours/week as an educational assistant working in classrooms AND 8 hours/week as a Preschool Teacher. Due to the preschool component, applicants need to have either their Level 2 or Level 3 Early Childhood Education Certification or their educational assistants certification. The successful applicant will also require First Aid. Andrew Preschool runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:30. The school is located in Andrew, AB, approximately 100 kilometres northeast of Sherwood Park, ABStudents from kindergarten to Grade 6 are provided with an education that develops individuals who are able to enter into society with the necessary skills and attitudes to be successful in the ever-changing future.Key Duties/ResponsibilitiesEducational Assistants (EAs) assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. EAs work as members of the school and student support team. EAs either work with a particular special needs student or a group of students withina class or in a special program.The EA provides routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher, an EA assists thestudent in acquiring the education and skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective, the EA follows an individually prescribed learning program, through team planning and working one-on-one with the student(s). This involves routine recording, basic charting and logging of observations.EAs may provide personal care and additional assistance for students depending on their particular needs.QualificationsEducationand ExperienceHigh School DiplomaEducational Assistant Certificate or comparable education (new probationary employees must have or will attain within 5 years ofhiredate) Early childhood training and experience would be an assetFirst Aid certificate would be an assetNon-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an assetCourses related to working with students with special needs would also be an assetMinimum of one-yearrelated experienceDemonstrated Skills and CompetenciesStrong oral and listening communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills combined with tact and diplomacyStrong organizational skills, time management skills and pacing skills to support student schedulingReliability and dependabilityAbility to work effectively as an active team member in cooperation with other team members and studentsComfort and competency in working with personal computers and other technologies to support student learningAbility to respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversityAbility to respond appropriately to challenging behaviours of studentsAbility to effectively utilize crisis intervention strategiesAbility to demonstrate flexibility in work assignmentsNote: This position might require lifting and carrying demands that require the ability to bend at the waist, stoop, and twist frequently, the ability to lift between 10 to 50 lbs., the ability to carry, push and pull between 10 to 50 lbs., and the ability to stand, walk and sit frequently.
