Job Description

Position Overview: Reporting to the Superintendent of Public Works, the heavy equipment operator is responsible for operating municipally owned equipment, transporting equipment between worksites and assisting with snow clearing. The heavy equipment operator is also responsible for inspecting, cleaning and maintaining the equipment. This position shall be a member of CUPE Local 4549.Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate equipment on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings
  • Operate all municipally owned heavy equipment including tractors, excavators, backhoes, plow trucks, dump trucks, etc. in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill the equipment as necessary
  • Maneuver heavy equipment into loading and unloading positions
  • Transport equipment between worksites
  • Other reasonable related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Public Works
Essential Criteria and CompetenciesMinimum qualifications include:
  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent, heavy equipment operator course would be considered an asset
  • Perform basic routine maintenance on equipment as required
  • Current WHMIS & First Aid (provided by employer)
  • Demonstrated experience to operate related equipment safely and efficiently
  • Previous experience working around water and waste water infrastructure considered an asset
  • Client oriented service delivery
  • Basic computer literacy including Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrate a high attention to detail, organization, ability to multitask, and self-motivated
  • Capable of working independently, promote a positive and safe work environment, working collaboratively with team members and other management in the field in physically demanding and fast paced work environment
  • Ability to lift 50lbs or more, ability to work in extreme weather conditions, confined space & heights.
  • Have and maintain a valid class 3 Nova Scotia Driver’s License with airbrakes and trailer endorsement

  • Reports to: Superintendent of Public Works
Working ConditionsThis position is physically demanding and requires an individual who is able to do a number if physically demanding responsibilities on a daily basis. They must:
  • Be available for reasonable overtime
  • Work in the field at parks, trails, project sites, utility plants, public roadways and municipal buildings or facilities;
  • Be able to life 23 kilograms/ 50 lbs without assistance
  • Be able to work in adverse and variable weather circumstances
  • Submission of a Criminal background check and Nova Scotia Driver’s abstract is required
