Job Description

St. Francis Xavier University, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, is a top-ranking Canadian primarily undergraduate university focused on academic excellence, innovation in teaching and research, service to society and international outreach. Student Services promises to be partners in the student experience, as educators to students and a resource to faculty and staff.We are seeking an Associate Chaplain to join the Student Services team. Reporting to University Chaplain, the Associate Chaplain assists the Chaplain with day-to-day duties, including assisting with mass and ministries at the University Chapel, as well as coordinating and implementing programming and events throughout the academic school year.This is a 3 year term, non-union, sessional position (9 months per year), working 37.5 hours/week. The salary range is $39,956-48,828. This years sessional term will end on May 6, 2022.Responsibilities include:

  • Be attentive to the religious, spiritual and ethical needs of students and be supportive of religious diversity. Provide spiritual guidance to students.
  • Assist the Chapel Priest with ministries and Mass at the University Chapel. Responsible for setting up before Mass and training student volunteers. Work with student volunteers in ministry - music, readers, and altar servers.
  • Serve as a member of the Chaplaincy Advisory Committee.
  • Be an active participant in the planning and delivery of Baccalaureate and Commencement activities.
  • Maintain spiritual expression and growth; advance intellectual and professional knowledge in her/his field
  • Organize events and programs which help in the faith development of university community (retreats, conferences, RCIA, staff/faculty pause).
  • Participate in classroom activities as requested by faculty and engage in other University and community events to build community and connections.
Qualifications:
  • The preferred candidate will have a background in theology and counselling.
  • Pastoral experience would be an asset.
  • Sensitivity to spiritual needs of a culturally diverse community
  • Demonstrated commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethical behaviour
  • Counselling or mental health care training or experience preferred
  • Completed training in crisis intervention preferred
  • Ability to maintain a clean criminal/vulnerable sector background check over time
  • Ability to work flexible work hours as required
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and relate well with young adults
