Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.For more information: https://novascotia.ca/natr/Seasonal StatusThis is a seasonal opportunity of six months or more with an anticipated season end date of October 30, 2021; the status of this seasonal opportunity is dependent on the start date of the successful applicant.About Our OpportunityWe are looking for Forestry Technicians who will deliver departmental programs concerning the development, maintenance, protection and public education of forestry, wildlife and recreation resources.Primary AccountabilitiesYou may be involved in a number of activities including:Crown Land or Private Land management;Monitoring for Forest Sustainability Regulations compliance;Forest fire prevention and suppression;Wildlife studies, biological surveys & insects and diseases surveys;Parks operations & property and vehicle maintenance;Land administration;Public liaison and education activitiesQualifications and ExperienceYou have successfully completed a department recognized two-year forestry or related Natural Resources Technical Diploma (Transcript upon request).You have a proven knowledge and experience in the processes, policies, procedures and regulations related to the Wildlife Management, Wood Acquisition Program (WAP), WHWP Regulations, Crown Road and Extension Methods. You are also knowledgeable in the principles and practices involved in forest resource management, forest fire prevention and suppression measures, public education activities, and occupational health & safety regulations.You are a strong communicator (both verbally and in writing) and have sound judgement. You provide exceptional service to clients as well as respond appropriately to crisis situations. You should have some experience with GPS systems and ArcView software and be computer literate.You have a valid NS driver’s license (minimum Class 5) or equivalent and access to a motor vehicle. You will be required to operate department vehicles, including off road vehicles, boats and equipment, work in remote areas and travel long distances on foot over rough terrain.It will be considered an asset if you have:Certification regarding Canadian Firearm Safety Course;N.S. Hunter Safety Course;N.S. Some field projects required contending with insects and extremes of temperature.Additional InformationDuties often require standby and callback, working irregular scheduled hours, and overtime. Must hold a valid divers license.Must be physically fit, as incumbents are required to lift and carry fire equipment over rough terrain and work long hours when engaged in fire suppression.
