StFX is seeking a Gender and Sexual Diversity Student Advisor to join our team. With a demonstrated commitment to student development you will have the opportunity to use your energy and enthusiasm to build a cohesive Residential community.The Gender and Sexual Diversity Student Advisor is an important member of the student life team and reports to the Human rights and Equity Manager. The GSDA manages the successful delivery of 2SLGBTQIA+-inclusive services, helps foster a 2SLGBTQIA+-inclusive campus culture, and serves as the primary contact for students regarding gender and sexual diversity. Major areas of responsibility include: the design, implementation, and evaluation of 2SLGBTQIA+-specific programming; providing resources and educational opportunities to the campus and wider community; overseeing culturally appropriate educational, recreational, and social programs consistent with the needs of a diverse student population; advocating on behalf of students to committees and the administration; and helping students learn and apply new skills, ideas, strategies, and tools that make sense of their experiences. This position is a permanent full time position, working 37.5 hours/week.The Gender and Sexual Diversity Student Advisor will play a critical role in promoting inclusivity and diversity celebration of all students. Highlights of the responsibilities include:Maintains confidential and/or anonymous advising records of all 2SLGBTQIA+ students accessing the office.Participates in case management meetings with Equity Advising Team.Refers students to appropriate resources on and off campus.Liaises with community partners and services to support referrals.Advises students on equity rights.Identifies and/or develops information, resources, and tools to assist students in better understanding issues of gender and sexual identity, 2SLGBTQIA+ culture, and safer practices.Support the university community in fostering a culturally inclusive environmentPrepares and produce individual and group sessions that focus on cultural safety and issues facing the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.Prepares and coordinates initiatives, celebrations, activities and program to promote, support, and celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ culture.Partners with campus teams and departments to support the student experienceAnticipate and arrange activities and events supporting student growth, engagement, and leadership.Finds and prepares opportunities for student skill-development through co-curricular activities.Uses recreational, cultural, and social events and activities to engage students and recognize important dates in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.Provides guidance to student organizations (e.g. X-Pride Society).Qualifications/Skills:A Bachelor's degree with some experience advising youth in a post-secondary environmentThe ideal candidate has lived experience (i.e. they are a member of or connected to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community), have an understanding of the intersectionality and diversity of queer students, and experience or understanding of all-gender housing on campusEvent planning and social media competencyExcellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skillsWell versed in the current issues impacting youth who identify as gender non-binary and/or sexually diverseExperience working with multiple stakeholders towards a common goalPreference may be given to graduates of St. Francis Xavier University.A more detailed job description is available upon request.
