The social worker will report to the Manager of Child and Adolescent Mental Health & Addiction Services, however will have shared responsibilities with both the NSHA & the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP). The social worker will provide school mental health services in the school environment within the designated Schools Plus schools (NDA, Cheticamp, Etoile de L’Acadie, Sydney, École acadienne de Pomquet, and École Beau-Port). The school mental health clinician is a team player and works flexibly to best meet the needs of clients and the service. The school mental health clinician is able to create and provide evidence-based educational presentations to clients, families, other agencies, and fellow staff members on topics relating to mental health and concurrent disorders. Flexibility in hours of work may be required depending on patient care.SchoolsPlus is a collaborative model that is comprehensive and student focused. Partners work together to educate and provide service to the child and their family, with the school as the center of the service. The service will focus on early identification and intervention of mental health disorders for children and adolescent within the school population. The school mental health clinician will act as a liaison between the client, school, and mental health services.This position supports multiple schools and dependent on where the successful candidate sits there will be the need to provide service virtually.QualificationsMaster’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in clinical mental health and/or addiction stream from an accredited program specializing in children, adolescents and familiesIf above not available, a master’s degree in Social Work from an acceptable institution that can demonstrate a significant portion of coursework focused on the areas of children, adolescents and families will be considered.Eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia Association of Social WorkersMinimum of two (2) years related experience in an inpatient/outpatient mental health setting providing independent assessment and treatment of mental health disorders in children, adolescents and their families, including concurrent disorders (substance abuse/dependence and mental illness)Demonstrated expertise about the principles of behaviour management, cognitive behaviour therapy, group therapy for children and adolescents, and brief therapy modelsKnowledge of the DSM-V and ability to use it to assess and diagnose common childhood mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, behaviour disorders) and the ability to identify and refer on more severe disorders (e.g., psychosis, bipolar)Experience in crisis intervention and risk assessmentDemonstrated leadership skills in working collaboratively and cooperatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a flexible work schedule and environment.Exemplary ability to coordinate the development of effective linkages with other agencies such as, justice, education, social service and community agencies as neededExtensive knowledge of community resourcesTraining and experience, completing mental health assessments and implementing evidence based treatment plans for children and adolescentsDemonstrated knowledge and experience in the psychological assessment of social, emotional, academic, intellectual and information processing skills of students to complete the assessment and diagnosis of individual students to better understand the student and to assist in developing appropriate programs which enhance learning and social outcomes;Demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive written psychoeducational assessment reports on students which include diagnoses, suggested teaching techniques, modifications and alternative strategies specific to the students needsKnowledge of educational planning and curriculum planning;Knowledge and experience in providing consultation with teachers, administrators and parents on the intellectual, academic, social and emotional development of students;Excellent written and oral presentation skills in both French and EnglishThe ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and flexibility in a manner consistent with the policies and standards of Mental Health & Addiction Services NSHA & CSAP.Successful Applicants are required to provide a Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) and Child Abuse Registry before starting employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employmentPLEASE NOTE: Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly state such equivalencies in their cover letter, resume, or application.
