Job Description

A Roof Over Your Head Society is a non-profit organization serving Antigonish and Guysborough. Advocating for people experiencing homelessness or precariously housed, the Housing Support Worker (HSW) will work to support individuals in need of assistance in obtaining safe and affordable housing.Position DetailsReporting to the Lead Housing Support Worker and AROYH Board of Directors, the HSW will work approximately 35 hours per week for a term of nine months, with compensation to be considered based on education and experience. This position may be extended, dependant on job performance and needs of the organization. A university degree or college diploma in a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience is required. The candidate willhavearespectful and non-judgemental attitude, be knowledgeable and/or willing to learn about the impact of poverty and homelessness and have an interest inworking with diverse social groups, non-profit organizations, and marginalized individuals and families. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Using excellent professional written and verbal communication skills to connect to and develop relationships with clients, Board members, community partners, government agencies, and other organizations and/or businesses in the community.
  • Advocating for individuals experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness, and referring them to community programs as appropriate.
  • Maintaining awareness of local community resources and assisting client in connecting with appropriate resources.
  • Conducting client interviews while professionally recording information on intake forms and documenting all interactions, while protecting confidential information.
  • Preparing and delivering reports to funding bodies, the AROYH Board, and as applicable.
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act, and ability to support and/or represent clients at hearings.
