Our vision is a society where people with ASD can live their lives to the fullest. This vision informs our day-to-day operations and provides a philosophy that revolves around person-focused supports, strength-based approaches, and community-oriented learning opportunities.Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centers. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support.POST-SECONDARY AUTISM SUPPORT SPECIALIST (PASS) – ANTIGONISH Term:  Casual, part-time (Required hours: Monday - Friday, 30–45-minute sessions; evening time. Max 8 hours per week, extension of hours may be available in the future.) Weekends may be required.Start Date:  November 2021Position location: Antigonish, Nova ScotiaSalary: TBD Application deadline: Advertised until role is filled  Competition No. 2021- 092 What you’ll be doing… A Post-Secondary Autism Support Specialist provides one to one individualized support to a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder in non-academic areas to promote their independence and positive social image. The support is a very collaborative approach between the Post-Secondary Support Supervisor, the specialist, the student and the faculty.What we’re looking for… A passionate, team player who takes personal accountability to deliver on what is expected in their role and who strives for excellence every day. You must have:Minimum qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree would be considered an asset, but not necessary
  • Clear, current Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Clear, current Child Abuse Registry Check
Minimum experience:
  • Basic knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Experience supporting individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities, and/or experience in supported employment, educational and/or recreational environments
  • Knowledge and ability to develop and modify activities when necessary to meet student’s development
Minimum skills and ability:
  • Must have flexibility in your schedule to work with student on late afternoons, evenings, and weekends
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Superior ability to build and foster relationships
  • Creative thinking
  • Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • High level of professionalism and judgment regarding student/student services relationships
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrate self-confidence in your role in the community and providing support one to one
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Guide students learning to complete goals in non-academic areas (social & life skills, organization, etc.) 
  • Plan activities for sessions that will help student develop skill & reach goal  
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to problem solve on the job   
  • Strong ability to create an environment of respect and trust with the student   
  • Promote inclusion and foster student independence 
  • Provide leadership and act as a positive role model always for the student 
  • Ensure adequate communication with Post-Secondary Support Supervisor, student, guardian/s, PSE faculty if applicable 
  • Be creative and have fun learning  
  • Adhere to post-secondary institution policies, practices, and procedures 
  • Attend training   
  • Traveling to and from campus to support student  
  • Other duties as required
