Program Teaching Staff Position -Citizen-led and Asset-Based Approaches to Community Developmentwww.coady.stfx.caThe OpportunityThe Coady Institute at St. Francis Xavier University seeks a uniquely skilled and motivated specialist to join our team of program teaching staff. This new position is being added as we expand our ground-breaking global engagement on citizen-led, asset-based community development (ABCD). The position is a two-year term position with the possibility of renewal, based in Antigonish, NS.Our ideal candidate is committed to building partnerships and supporting leaders and development practitioners who are focused on helping their communities advance social change. This professional will have a mix of demonstrated global community development experience as well as strong teaching or facilitation skills rooted in adult education principles. The candidate we hope to attract values shared leadership and collaboration and brings innovation, energy and dynamism to their work. Among other assets and gifts, the successful candidate will bring their leadership in this field to several project partnerships. The successful candidate will have analytical capacity, research and writing skills to offer to the design and delivery of our curriculum, education programs, and research initiatives. Ideally, this individual will contribute their subject matter expertise to the Institutes work on climate resilience, and/or the health sector and to a growing body of innovative initiatives. The candidate will also have strong capacities in applying gender and intersectional lenses to the work.About the Coady International InstituteLocated on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University in the traditional and unceded territory of the Mikmaq people, the Coady Institute is a global leader in citizen-led, community-driven, asset-based approaches to change. In collaboration with partners and change agents worldwide, the Institute works to strengthen local economies, build resilient communities, and promote accountable governance.We prioritize women, youth, and Indigenous leaders and have dedicated programming in these areas. We also have strong programs rooted in our universitys history of support to Atlantic Canada communities and focused on employment innovation, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. Coady Institutes courses are tailored to community leaders and practitioners and offered on campus, online, and in communities both inCanada and around the world. The Institutes research and documentation agenda works with partners to apply a participatory, non-extractive and non-exploitative approach to the analysis and documentation of community change processes.The PositionAs a member of Coadys program team, the successful candidate for this position will have:

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in the advancement of citizen-led, asset-based approaches to development, with subject matter expertise in climate resilience and/or health noted above;
  • Masters degree in a related areas of study or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated expertise and partnerships in one or more developing countries or regions;
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with adult education methodologies, teaching and facilitation;
  • Experience in curriculum development and the management of educational and community programs or projects;
  • Demonstrated experience in gender-based analysis;
  • Well-developed research, analytical and writing skills, with a supporting track record of publications (practitioner, academic or popular);
  • Capacity for networking and managing complex collaborative cross-organizational relationships and and/or communities of practice;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment while ensuring that outcomes are achieved;
  • Curiosity, open-mindedness, ability to think strategically and outside the box, and a high degree of comfort with uncertainty and complexity;
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally as required; and
  • Fluency in French would be considered a valuable asset.
Key Functions and Responsibilities
  • Contribute to and collaborate as a co-facilitator or project lead in other Coady project partnerships, overseeing technical aspects of programs;
  • Develop curriculum; teach and facilitate modules focused on citizen-led asset based community development (as well as other thematic areas as appropriate and related to subject matter expertise) as part of the Coady certificate and diploma programs;
  • In partnership with other program staff, develop and manage on-campus, off-campus and online courses and community initiatives, including strengthening community relationships, participant selection and mentorship components;
  • Provide inputs on community development program designs for other Coady programs;
  • Prepare and contribute to research and funder reports, as required;
  • Contribute to the life of Coady and Coady programs as a mentor, advisor and colleague.
The job is an Association of University Teachers (AUT) position and subject to the STFX AUT Collective Agreements terms and conditions.
