Priority will be given to Permanent Employees.Ardrossan Junior Senior High is a grades 7-12 school with approximately 860 students, 43 teaching staff, and 20 support staff. The school is located in the town of Ardrossan, Alberta approximately 10 minutes east of Sherwood Park, Alberta.Our school offers students a wide variety of opportunities to make student programs challenging and interesting. As we are a combined junior/senior high school, our staff and administration get to know our students very well during their years at Ardrossan. There is a strong sense of family at our school.Preference will be given to those candidates that possess a Library Technician Diploma. A strong background in technology is an asset in order to maintain, monitor and troubleshoot school based Tecnology. Previous experience working in a school setting would also be an asset.POSITION SUMMARYThe Library Technician assists students, teachers, and support staff in effectively utilizing the learning resources available within the library/learning commons. The library technician must understand the standardized technical procedures that exist in all libraries and must be an information specialist in all forms, including books, periodicals and online resources. The Library Technician will maintain the library/learning commons through team planning and application of standardized library policies and procedures.KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESInput and monitor the circulation of library resources.Compile overdue reports and track overdue materials.Contact parents regarding overdue materials, as necessary.Collect money for lost and damaged materials.Shelve books and other materials in a timely fashion.Facilitate the ordering and circulation of materials within the school.Route periodicals to appropriate teachers.Provide guidance to students in locating materials both in print and online.Provide readers advisory service for students.Facilitate and support individual students and classes doing research in the library.Supervise and assist students with Internet usage.Assist teachers in locating resources for unit planning.Demonstrate the use of OPAC for staff and students.Use International Cataloguing Standards to create electronic records and to modify imported and existing records in the library database.Locate and import electronic library records using subscription services and/or the Internet.Manage database of electronic library records through global changes, authority indexes, and individual updates.Manage and circulate other resources (textbooks, novel study materials, etc.)Assist students and teachers with the operation of computers (including Internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and other applications).Maintain a consideration file for future purchases. Place library materials and supply orders.Process new materials (organizing, taping, covering, stamping, bar-coding, etc.).Maintain a neat and organized work environment.Create and maintain an inviting learning environment.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh School DiplomaLibrary Technician Diploma (2 year) or equivalent education (new probationary employees must have or will attain within 5 years of hire date)Minimum of one-year related experienceKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDESKnowledge of general library operations along with a knowledge of various specific routines and practices that are common to all libraries.Knowledge of library automation systems and the ability to learn new systems and software programs, a comprehensive knowledge of MARC, AACR2, Dewey Decimal System, and standardized subject headings.Knowledge of computers in a networked environment.Knowledge of Makerspaces, assisting teachers and students with tools to enhance hands-on education and lifelong learning through experimentation and exploration.Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail applications.Good troubleshooting skills and organizational skills.The ability to maintain consistent routines and practices with an attention to detail and accuracy.Good oral and written communication skills including library advocacy.Good interpersonal skills.Ability to take direction as well as be self-motivated and work independently.Personal qualities such as flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination.Ability to work successfully with students, staff, and other educational professionals.Ability to coordinate activities for students and staff which enhance student learning.PHYSICAL DEMANDSSome sitting, standing, moving, lifting and bending (or a combination of these movements) and some physical effort required.
