Student Support Worker (Employment Equity) Term - Wolfville Area - ElementaryStudent Support WorkerJob will support Wolfville Area ElementarySchoolsTerm Position - 8 Hours day of recorded time based on a flexible work schedule, which may include working after School, evenings and on weekends.Closing date for applications - September 9, 2021Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU) Local 73 Bargaining Unit.The goal of the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education is to be a diverse workforce that is representative, at all levels, of the students and families we serve. This position is available only to peoples of African ancestry, and persons with disabilities.This position will be supporting students of African ancestry at Wolfville Area Elementary Schools (Wolfville, Hantsport, Port Williams, and L.E Shaw), reporting to the Coordinator of African Canadian Education Services. This position is for 8 hours per day.The Student Support Worker will work directly with Africian Canadian students to provide support to them and their families in making schooling a positive experience. The goal of the Student Support Worker is to help students achieve success and remain in school by fostering a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity among students, parents/guardians, teachers and all community members. The Student Support Worker will be required to work outside of regular school hours in accordance with the Collective Agreement in order to accomplish the goals of the program.Qualifications and Abilities:Post-secondary education (in human services or a related field preferred).Be of African ancestry.Knowledge of the African Nova Scotian Community.Experience and ability to work with African Nova Scotian youth, parents/guardians and communities.Demonstrated skills working with youth.Above average interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team involving students, teachers, parents/guardians, support agencies, and the surrounding communities.Ability to work independently.Willingness to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the communities served by the schools and to attend related community meetings.Knowledge of, experience in, and commitment to the principles of race relations, cross-cultural understanding and human rights.Knowledge and experience in mediation and conflict resolution.Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a properly insured vehicle as per school board policy, if required to transport students.Responsibilities:The goal of the Student Support Worker is to help students achieve success and remain in school by fostering a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity among students, parents/guardians, teachers and all community members.The Student Support Worker will be required to work outside of regular school hours in accordance with the Collective Agreement in order to accomplish the goals of the program.Applications from peoples of African ancestry, and persons with disability will be considered: first to AVRCE employees who are members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU) Local 73 the AVRCE and then to external applicants.We thank all applicants for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.Quick Apply
