Job Description

Development Officer, Annual GivingBanff Centre for Arts and Creativity aims to inspire everyone who attends our campus – artists, leaders, and thinkers – to unleash their creative potential.We acknowledge, with deep respect and gratitude, our home on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain. In the spirit of respect and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Banff area, known as “Minhrpa” (translated in Stoney Nakoda as “the waterfalls”) and the Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) – comprised of the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney Band – as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy comprised of the Siksika, Piikani, Kainai. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Shuswap Nations, Ktunaxa Nations, and Metis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. We acknowledge all Nations who live, work, and play, help us steward this land, and honour and celebrate this place.The OpportunityThe Development Officer, Annual Giving is responsible for leading and growing the Banff Centre’s annual giving program, focusing on developing and implementing innovative strategies and approaches to motivate, secure and recognize giving in this area. This portfolio primarily focuses on securing one time and multi-year commitments up to the $15,000 level for identified fundraising priorities, including the annual fund, as well as other programs and projects.Roles and ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, below are some key accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage an assigned portfolio of prospects and supporters through a proactive contact program, regularly audit and adapt related development activities to ensure goals are being met, implement own pipeline management planning processes and fundraising strategies, to ensure sustainability and growth of revenue
  • Design, implement and regularly audit the annual solicitation, recognition and stewardship cycle of the annual giving portfolio to compel continuous and progressive giving.
  • Achieve and/or exceed revenue goals for the assigned portfolio by developing and implementing appropriate identification, prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies
  • Continually maintain a high level of knowledge on the Centre’s programming to support fundraising activity
  • Work collaboratively with the Development Communication unit to write/ensure professional, meaningful and appropriate supporter communications, and with the Stewardship team to ensure best practice stewardship activities are implemented, that increases supporter engagement, increases supporter retention rates, and contributions within the portfolio under management
  • Lead and deliver on the direct mail and other annual giving appeals and coordinating and project managing all aspects of those efforts (including liaising with mail houses and other internal or external parties or vendors)
  • Participate on a team to lead and execute on identified fundraising priorities in order to achieve annual campaign goals and targets as well as overall team objectives
  • In collaboration with the Development Communications team, develop the key annual giving messages for various communication outlets for the Centre (i.e. website, annual publications, etc.)
  • Manage relationships with a large portfolio of annual giving prospects and supporters (including Banff Centre staff and external individual, corporation and foundation giving) to maximize gifts in this area in a sustainable way. Continuously develop and foster these relationships with a view to high professional standards building and expanding Banff Centre’s base of friends, advocates and supporters, and its profile in the Arts and Leadership community
  • Monitor, manage, and execute on assigned portfolio and other annual goals (including revenue progress), reporting and presenting on progress on agreed milestones
  • Identify aligned prospects for fundraising priorities through a variety of tactics including but not limited to research, analysis, assigned portfolio management, and qualification strategies
  • Implement, monitor, manage, and adjust fundraising plans in support of approved and priority fundraising projects, including designated and undesignated funding
  • Maintain call reports, strategy notes and prospect files and use other fundraising processes and systems in line with set office expectations
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge on sector and best practices within sector to ensure continual professional growth
  • Ensure the ethical handling of confidential donor and prospect information
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Minimum three years of successful experience with proven track record in annual giving campaigns , and portfolio specific areas of fundraising
  • Experience working in the arts and / or post-secondary is preferred
  • Strong technical skills (MS Office Suite, Raisers Edge and other tools)
  • Excellent customer service skills with proven ability to develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with supporters, volunteers, Board members, vendors and staff members
  • Commercial acumen, can grasp big picture and how work fits within big picture in a fundraising context, politically and financially savvy, demonstrated experience and success in building, leading and executing fundraising plans and strategies to deliver on (or exceed) set goals
  • Savvy at understanding supporter needs and perceptions and ability to adapt to them accordingly to align with organization’s fundraising priorities
  • Outstanding interpersonal and written communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with, motivate and influence, a broad range of individuals
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy and creativity. Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times. High ethical skills in context of a Development Office including conduct at events and representing an organization
  • Demonstrated strength in planning, coordinating and executing on projects efficiently and effectively in an environment which is fast paced, with competing demands and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated initiative, autonomy and strategic thinking; adaptable to change, and take on new tasks willingly
  • Regardless of the time constraints and demands on time, the incumbent must be professional and convey an attitude of helpfulness and concern
Employment Terms and Benefits
  • In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6 month probationary period.
