Please reach out to us to learn more!General Accountabilities:

  • Support the IT Operations Manager by managing (i.e. evaluating requirements, identifying issues and drivers, setting strategy, evaluating options, developing and providing ongoing sustainment of integrated solutions) all of the hardware including but not limited to the Computer Room Equipment, Control Room Equipment, Servers,Workstations, Integrated Voice Communication System, Monitoring Systems and Auxiliary.
  • Support Systems at the OGCC and Back-up Centres, contributing to the following:
    • Achievement of corporate performance targets.
    • Compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
    • Fulfillment of customer expectations.
    • Workers and public safety.
    • Efficiency of the Ontario electricity system.
  • This includes tracking industry trends, collaborating with the IEMO, NPCC, NERC, internal partners, and suppliers, assessing system events for lessons learned and implementing processes and systems to ensure compliance with market rules and ongoing regulatory readiness.
Specific Accountabilities:Through collateral relationships with the direct reports of the Manager - System Architecture, and within context provided by the Manager - System Architecture (i.e., corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.), provide the following:
  • Manage staff engaged in the development and implementation of complex projects, processes, for the implementation and maintenance of the computing hardware, software, and facilities required at the OGCC, Back-up and Disaster Recovery Centres.
  • Plan, schedule and assign the work with instructions, provide advice and guidance and check the work to maintain quality, accuracy and productivity.
  • Select an optimum course of action and make recommendations to supervisor where any highly unusual operating expense or amount of staff is involved and alternative solutions are available.
  • Identify and administer budget for the section, including cost control.
  • Ensure the Computer Room Equipment, Control Room Equipment, Servers, Workstations, Telecommunications Network, Integrated Voice Communication System, Monitoring Systems and Auxiliary Support Systems at the OGCC, Back-up and Disaster Recovery Centres are maintained to required levels of performance and reliability.
  • Design and carry out a comprehensive regular testing program to ensure that all redundancies are fully functional and ready. Integrate corporate objectives and strategies with regulatory requirements and technology trends to evaluate options and set strategies for the evolution and maintenance of the Network Management System, the Network Outage Management Systems, the Outage Response Management System, the Integrated Voice Communication Systems and the wide-area control network.
  • Work collaboratively with the other direct reports of the IT Operations Manager to integrate diverse requests for operating tool functionalities relative to strategies and objectives, evaluate options and synthesize optimal specifications and timely plans for enhancements to the Operating Facilities and Tools.
  • Develop and provide budgetary and class A estimates for operating facilities and tools alternatives for business planning and work programming consideration.
Managerial Accountabilities:Maintaining a team of subordinates who are capable of producing the outputs required:
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a staffing strategy for the OGCC IT Operations Department that will ensure the long term sustainment of the high expertise resources required for this function.
  • Develop and mentor subordinates and implement other strategies to ensure smooth succession.
  • Ensure subordinates are able and willing to produce the desired output
  • Assess staff capability to do the required work now and in the future
  • Conduct personal effectiveness reviews of subordinates to build relationships, trust, and to improve their effectiveness
  • Providing leadership to subordinates so that they collaborate competently, and with full commitment with each other in pursuing the goals set:
  • Translate the goals and objectives of Hydro One and its major Business Units into a direction which guides the operation of the department.
  • Communicate priorities, expectations and direction to staff.
  • Define specific tasks for subordinates that are required to achieve the desired results and/or to accommodate thechanges required within the business operations.
  • Providing a safe and healthy work environment:
  • Provide subordinates with appropriate knowledge, skills, information, work procedures and equipment to facilitate
  • responsible behavior which will protect their safety and contribute to their health.
  • Provide a work environment and facilities where health and safety incidents are minimized and employees are not dissatisfied.
  • Provide a work environment that supports and values diversity and is free from harassment.
  • Know and ensure that subordinates comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, Corporate business unit and local policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices related to their work.
Accountability for the outputs of others:
  • Set appropriate expectations, priorities and context for subordinates (i.e., Corporate and Network Asset Management objectives, strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc).
  • Work with supervising subordinates to set an effective framework of policies and procedures for the work of the unit.
  • Know, and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements and all Hydro One
  • corporate and business unit policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the business.
  • Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views on conditions and potential changes
  • affecting their work, and establishing continuous improvement program opportunities.
Selection Criteria:
  • Requires a deep knowledge of computer and network equipment configurations, computing and storage equipment, operating systems, and computer room facilities.
  • Requires proficiency in English to communicate effectively with others, to be able to collect information from documents and prepare effective correspondence and interact with clients related to OGCC IT Operations project and support activities.
  • Requires knowledge of network protocols and design conventions.
  • Requires knowledge of computer operating systems and equipment configurations to effectively design, oversee and recommend solutions.
  • Requires experience to be familiar with the control centre design work, with systems and facilities and with related standards, procedures, documentation, data files, work practices, routines and schedules.
  • Requires knowledge of basic science, physics, applied mathematics, computer science and the like to carry out technical, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the bulk transmission and distribution systems.
  • Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.
  • Experience in system design within a high-availability, high security environment.
