Today, we’re focused on providing exceptional customer service and ensuring we are building safe communities where we live, work and play.It’s an exciting time to join the team at Hydro One!Job Function:Provide digital mapping, photogrammetric products and conventional line work for the production of route and line location plans. Prepare and/or edit digital files required in an automated mapping/facilities management/geographic information system (AM/FM/GIS). Assist in the evaluation of software and GIS related systems. Provide advice and guidance to contractors on Quality Assurance matters.Summary Statement:

  • Participate in the work of providing digital mapping, photogrammetric products and conventional line work for production for route and profile plans, right of way selection plans, line location plans, approval material, expropriation notice, title studies and the like. Digitize graphic information such as roads, streams, other topographic features etc. to be integrated into digital GIS file. Extract digital data from EMR digital map files by loading, windowing, stripping, clipping etc. for the creation of new files. Add ownership, geographic fabric to new and existing files. Create plot files, merge data to create clients custom product. Deliver electronically to electrostatic and pen type plotters, both remote and in house. Create lookup tables to facilitate the use of external plotting facilities.
  • Prepare and/or edit digital files for the preparation of parametric route and profile plans, legal plans and other drawings required in a (GIS). Load and down load data collected by photogrammetric or electronic survey methods to digital computer systems. Select, extract or merge digital data required for proposed or existing transmission line corridors, station sites, etc. Produce duplicate digital files to enable contractors to add results of legal surveys, extent of property holdings and other pertinent information respecting land rights. Check submitted digital files with regard to clarity and accuracy. Prepare and produce digital files using data obtained from the field and verify data by running the appropriate checking programs. Prepare and forward computer plots, in addition to duplicate copies, of the final digital files. Check all information to make sure that Hydro One standards are maintained.
  • Assist in evaluating the accuracy and benefits of various software packages and computerized systems that perform GIS, mapping and data capture related functions.
  • Provide advice and guidance to contractors on quality assurance matters as necessary and demonstrate procedures to the contractors, on the use of related equipment, both at contractors offices and Ontario Hydro, ensuring that digital data is portrayed accurately on orthophoto prints. Provide solutions to problems encountered in the import and output of digital data respecting different hardware and software used by contractors, corporate clients, government agencies etc. Receive assignment from engineering personnel or supervisor, accompanied by field notes and associated drawings. Plan the layout of the drawing on power corridors in order to comply with corporate requirements for legal plans. Perform calculations employing conventional methods and/or computer terminal facilities. Annotate photographic plans including "Rights of Way", property boundaries and other associated data. Prepare Land Division Committee plans and individual property sketches. Obtain numbers as issued for drawings from/record data center, apply accordingly, record, cross-reference as required, check prints and attend to similar matters associated with the drafting process. Submit completed work for review, check and approval and correct or revise as necessary.
  • Carry out survey calculations employing conventional and/or computerized methods. Prepare computer input and operate appropriate terminal in accordance with operational procedures and established formats. Check computer printout and correct errors according to procedural guidelines, as required.
  • Produce technical or graphic illustrations using perspective, freehand or other pertinent drafting techniques in order to portray illustrations for public display purposes, property transactions as well as various graphic charts and/or illustrative materials required for meetings and presentations.
  • Check drafting work, as assigned, utilizing standard and computerized techniques (eg. plan closure process). Check all drawings, illustrations, calculations and relevant technical work produced by the drafting group for accuracy, suitability for stated purpose, conformance to departmental practices, standards and guidelines, and ensure adherence to Federal and Provincial statutes and regulations as required. Mark up, check prints and forward to appropriate source for further action.
  • Monitor, review and check the work performed by contractor’s drafting groups in order to ensure that Hydro One requirements and specifications are being met, and that work is carried out in accordance with established procedures, standards, as well as adhering to government statutes and regulations, as appropriate. Where major problems are encountered, refer to supervisor for guidance and/orresolution.
  • Transfer and/or illustrate onto maps and/or photomaps, geographic, physiographic and Hydro One and other utility facilities detail. Receive assignment from client with discussion regarding requirements, such as scale, amount of detail, etc. Be responsible for the work performed to completion. Compile and correlate the required data from existing and/or proposed information and other available resources. Process assignment in accordance with requirements and arrangements agreed upon with client.
  • Annotate photogrammetric maps and/or other base material in order to illustrate township fabric, topographic details, Hydro One and other utility facilities, nomenclature and the like. Receive assignment from supervisor or others accompanied by instructions with regards to requirements, specifications and time limitations. Utilize current available resources in order to obtain maps, plans and other relevant data as required. Carry out assignment to completion through the application of departmental standards regarding title blocks, scales, format, etc. Obtain plan number, as issued, index and submit finished work for check and approval; correct/revise as necessary and arrange for final reproduction according to procedure.
  • Prepare schematic maps, charts, drawings, graphs and the like forth purpose of various studies, and graphic illustrations required for inclusion in reports, manuals and other pertinent documentation. Compile the necessary materials and data, and proceed with work assignment to produce effective results.
  • Carry out the maintenance of drafting system facilities including northern and southern Ontario maps, illustrations, plans, etc.
  • Periodically carry out some of the normal supervisory responsibilities such as assigning and checking work providing advice and guidance, etc., for staff assigned or delegated to assist in work activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Selection Criteria:Education:
  • Requires a knowledge of mathematics, computer science, survey drafting, mapping principles, geodesy, geography and photogrammetric processes.
  • Requires a knowledge of computer information technology and GIS database principles and techniques to perform data management analysis.
  • Requires a knowledge of computer technology to apply various software applications to develop and maintain GIS supporting graphic map data.
  • Requires a good knowledge of the association of graphic map data with related database technology in order to digitize graphic information and topographic data for loading/downloading to digital computer systems.
  • Requires a good knowledge of English in order to effectively communicate the required procedures and instructions to department staff, clients, suppliers and government agencies. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of Grade XIII plus intermediate courses OR Grade XII plus lengthy courses.
Experience:
  • Requires experience progressing through preceding levels in order to become proficient in various drafting skills and methods.
  • Requires experience in order to utilize a wide variety of materials, tools and associated apparatus to carry out drafting activities for plans, illustrations, maps, photogrammetric drawings, etc., including experience in the operation of automated mapping/facilities management/geographic systems (AM/FM/GIS), with particular emphasis on digital mapping
  • Requires experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to model distribution network circuits using GIS systems.
  • Requires experience with the GIS database including the extraction of data from databases.
  • Requires practical experience to become familiar with the application of various available computer facilities utilized for survey calculations, the development of plans, profiles, route plans, site drawings, planimeter route files, legal survey plans, illustrations, checking processes, system facilities map maintenance, as well as department standards, procedures and guidelines established for executing the work. A period of over 4 years up to and including 6 years of experience is considered necessary to gain this experience.
  • Supervisory responsibility is not normally part of the job requirement, but there may be a requirement to mentor/train other employees how to perform tasks or duties. There will also be opportunities to step up in the supervisory role, as part of the development plan.
