Job Description

Your future starts now at Empower Simcoe!We are recruiting for a full-time permanent Housing Access Worker to assist individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to obtain affordable accommodation and relevant support services; to teach skills which will help people maintain their housing; support individuals and families to apply for related funding streams and assist with service navigation; provide landlord/tenant mediation and to work with the Housing Tribunal. Compensation package:

  • Work up to 37.5 hours per week;
  • Minimum starting rate of pay is $31.02 per hour;
  • 11 paid statutory holidays;

Following the successful completion of a 3-month probationary period:
  • Employer paid benefits (life insurance, short- and long-term disability benefits, health and dental);
  • Group RRSP plan with Employer matched benefit up to 5% of gross earnings biweekly;

Minimum requirements of this position include:
  • Post-secondary diploma in social services from an accredited college or a closely related field; and/or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities;
  • One (1) year #39;s full-time experience in promoting housing for marginalized persons, experience within the Addictions, Mental Health or a closely related field is an asset;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human/legal rights and relevant legislation;
  • Knowledge of screening and assessment tools related to the field;
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and networking skills;
  • Knowledge of community resources;
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team are required;
Special factors:
  • Have an ability to provide customer service in a calm and professional manner in challenging and stressful situations;
  • Be prepared to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends;
  • A valid G class driver #39;s license and own reliable transportation is required;
Duties and responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
  • Maintaining a caseload of individuals and families who require assistance in obtaining and maintaining adequate housing;
  • Advocating to landlords on behalf of clients requiring housing;
  • Developing and maintaining a list of landlords/property managers willing to rent rooms, apartments, houses to persons with housing needs;
  • Providing support to both landlords and tenants, in order to maintain housing;
  • Facilitating information sharing workshops and sessions;
  • Providing training in budgeting, household management, social skills, and other skills necessary to maintain adequate housing;
  • Being familiar with Landlord-Tenant Act and other related regulations and assisting clients accordingly;
  • Assessing housing needs and assisting clients in securing housing to meet those needs;
  • Treating all information pertaining to both clients and landlords as confidential as outlined in the Empower Simcoe Personnel Policy.
