Job Description

Cambium is looking for an Intermediate Terrestrial Ecologist to join the Natural Sciences group and support a variety of projects related to environmental impact assessment, ecological monitoring, species at risk protection, invasive species management, and ecological enhancement/restoration. Our Natural Sciences group works with a variety of public and private clients on a wide range of projects. The successful candidate will have in‐depth training and experience as a Biologist or Ecologist; will be expected to complete ecological field inventories to a high level of detail following provincial protocols; contribute to the preparation of reports and mapping; and support senior staff in various aspects of project management and delivery.

  • Carrying out fieldwork using established protocols and classification systems, to complete surveys and inventories of the natural environment. This will require advanced knowledge of terrestrial and wetland flora and fauna native to Central Ontario.
  • Contributing to deliverables that characterize the natural environment and provide an assessment of development-related impacts, at various scales. This includes completing literature reviews, natural feature mapping, technical writing, and data analyses.
  • Supporting senior staff in project planning, scheduling, and allocation of personnel and resources.
  • Collaborating with other Natural Sciences Group staff to complete template and resource development, and internal training.
  • Facilitating the preparation of proposals and grant applications for prospective work.
  • Adhering to health and safety protocols for self and support staff.
  • Providing mentorship and training to junior Cambium personnel.
  • Working to meet internal and external deadlines, which may require occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Other tasks, as required.
Job Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of employment experience (preferably in the engineering consulting realm).
  • B.Sc. or BES (minimum) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline.
  • Provincially recognized Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) training/certification.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and inventorying terrestrial flora and fauna.
  • Experience supporting the preparation of environmental impact statements, natural heritage evaluations, species at risk assessments, environmental monitoring plans, and other similar studies.
  • Proven data compilation, data analysis, mapping, and technical writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills with fluency (reading, writing, and oral) in English.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
ASSETS
  • Provincially recognized training/certification in the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) System.
  • Knowledge of and experience demonstrating conformity with provincial natural heritage policies of the Provincial Policy Statement, Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, Greenbelt Plan, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and/or Niagara Escarpment Plan.
  • Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and Species at Risk Act, and associated regulation.
  • Knowledge of the Planning Act and/or Conservation Authorities Act, and associated regulation.
  • Experience working collaboratively with engineering, planning, and project management professionals.
  • Experience working on large-scale land development, infrastructure, and/or ecological monitoring projects.
  • Additional training/certification relating to ecological protocols or environmental monitoring (i.e., Arborist/ISA, Butternut Health Assessor, Class 2 Backpack Electrofishing, OBBN, OSAP, Can-CISEC, etc.)
