At AIS, we provide technical support to the department by collecting, maintaining, and distributing asset data in a method best suited for decision makers. AIS provides coordination and information to the department and public, with relation to the use of provincial roads.About Our OpportunityAs the Geographic Information System (GIS) Officer, you provide highly skilled geomatics expertise and experience. You are an essential part of the AIS team; leading and overseeing a host of technical projects related to the support, operation, and evolution of GIS technology within the department, including hardware, software, and data maintenance.Primary AccountabilitiesAs the GIS Officer, you provide technical direction and support to various in-house staff, off-site staff, as well as contract personnel engaged in the creation, maintenance, and distribution of the department’s corporate geographic databases. You will assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of department GIS Policies, procedures, and standards for facilitating the integration of geographically referenced data. You will collaborate often with other government departments and stakeholders including the Geomatics Centre, EMO, and Internal Services.You will be responsible to manage multiple projects at any given time, including daily tasks such as:

  • Managing spatial databases, and performing related analytical functions;
  • Employing GIS technologies, relational database practices, geographic analysis tools and methodologies;
  • Data collection, data conversion, technical documentation; and
  • Identifying opportunities to promote the benefits of geomatics in government business.
Qualifications and ExperienceGraduation from an approved GIS technical school or a degree in a related field is required.As the ideal candidate, you are familiar and have experience with:
  • GIS operations and ESRI GIS software products, including ArcGIS Online;
  • Linear Referencing Systems (LRS);
  • Application of relational database principles;
  • Working with the Nova Scotia Road Network (NSRN); and
  • AutoCAD and the Microsoft Office Suite.
Understanding or experience with the following would be considered an asset:
  • Building geoprocessing models via Python or Model Builder;
  • Sharing content through ArcGIS for Server or corporate databases; and
  • Knowledge of MS Access for assisting in database development and integration with GIS.
As travel is required for this position, you must have a valid drivers license. Candidates are asked to include a current drivers abstract with their application.Project management skills are required as you often work independently within a deadline driven environment. You have a knack for developing and maintaining strong working relationships between various stakeholders and employ a high standard for client and customer service in your work.
