Job Description

JOB OPPORTUNITY - OPERATIONS MANAGERChaleur Forest Products is currently recruiting for an Operations Manager at its Belledune location. This individual is bilingual and will direct activities of the sawmill, planer and kilns, production through supervisors and staff and will support the Vice-President of Sawmill Operations in leading a team of professionals.Chaleur Forest Products is a growing forest products company which is privately owned and operated. It is comprised of two sawmills, located in Bathurst and Belledune, NB. The Company also operates a large Woodlands Division in Miramichi, NB.The sawmills have a secure, long term supply of logs. The sawmill based in Belledune, NB, produces 175 million board feed per year, with raw material from both private wood lots and Crown land. This site employs close to 250 people.Both plants market their production throughout North America, with the majority destined for the US Eastern Seaboard, by rail, and distributed by truck to the New England States and Canada.Role Overview:

  • Liaise with the President, VP Sawmill Operations, VP Finance, VP Woodlands and Director, Human Resources in overseeing the operations at the Belledune site;
  • A working relationship with the Woodlands division internally as well as external customers/vendors/contractors;
  • Responsible for all manufacturing and processing functions in the operation; Ensure compliance with all Company rules and regulatory requirements as they pertain to the operation;
  • Prepare the operation’s operating/maintenance/capital budgets; identify opportunities for capital and develop business cases for the expenditure. Once approved, oversee the purchase, installation, and start-up of the equipment;
  • Recruit, develop, and retain key personnel through strong leadership and provide opportunities to learn and progress;
  • Assist in the training of problem solving techniques and root cause analysis troubleshooting techniques;
  • Actively participate in daily supervisory meetings, attend monthly operations meetings, and union/management meetings;
  • Generate, review, and analyze reporting related to production efficiency, quality, and safety KPIs;
  • Assist in promoting a continuous improvement culture through communication and coaching employees as well as finding opportunities for streamlining production activities and enhancing value-added processes;
  • Develop and maintain a workplace culture that is aligned with the Company’s vision and values in respect to worker safety, ensuring safe work practices, and assisting in the development of and following safety procedures;
  • Ensure product quality standards are being met.
The Candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a sawmill operations manager;
  • Ability to effectively motivate and lead teams;
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment;
  • Previous wood products manufacturing management experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, problem solving and team building skills;
  • Effective communicator with strong verbal, written and presentation skills (Bilingual imperative);
  • Computer proficient with Microsoft Office and have an aptitude to navigate and acquire skills to use internal systems.
