JOB DESCRIPTION - NLMC GENERAL MANAGERAbout the CompanyNorthumberlamb Marketing Co-Op (NLMC) is a producer owned and operated lamb marketing co-operative that strives to provide high quality lamb products to our customers. Established 1982, we take great pride in the quality of our products as well as the safety of our product, facilities, operations, and employees. As a federally approved facility, our quality standards have made our lamb some of the most sought after by some of the best chefs and restaurants throughout Nova Scotia and Canada.About the OpportunityThe General Manager will serve as the strategic oversight and operational leadership of all aspects of our lamb killing, cutting, processing and packing plant located in Truro, Nova Scotia. This position requires knowledge of production, leadership, team development, and operational effectiveness in the food processing space. As General Manager you will report into the NLMC Board, and will directly supervise the Plant Manager and the administrative operations of the business.Key Responsibilities: Strategic

  • Steer, manage and guide NLMC doubling their processing operations in the next 5 years.
  • Develop an annual business plan and budget within the overall framework and guidance as provided by the NLMC Board.
  • Provide monthly Management reports in a timely manner measuring performance against budget, and proposing any initiatives or corrective actions.
  • Review and set producer and market pricing.
Operational
  • Prepare and manage 1-year capital and operational budgets. Track plan-to-actual and proactively identify solutions to ensure budgets are met. Develop a rolling 1-year capital plan.
  • Provide oversight, establish priorities and allocate resources to ensure the implementation of key strategic priorities in line with the business plan and budget.
  • Evaluates functional activities to verify they are performed at the appropriate levels of the organization and that resources are in place to build capability where potential skill gaps have been identified.
  • Assists in development of short and long-term goals; producer engagement, sales, market development and operational priorities or execution.
  • Manage staff and administer established wage scale, overtime, vacations, and other benefits.
Control and minimize labor overtime, repair expenses and utilities.
  • Ensure that all production activities are in accordance with plant policies, programs, and standards concerning safety, quality, productivity, and cost.
  • Identify processing and operational improvements and implement new processes, IT systems and equipment which support an efficient operation; strive for an operation with continuous improvement.
  • Actively promote adherence to Quality, Sanitation, HACCP, and CFIA standards to achieve a finished product within quality control specifications.
  • Challenge current equipment and production procedures; recommend alternatives for improved productivity and efficiency and lead the improvements.
  • Works closely with the Plant Manager to develop and maintain a positive employee relations environment.
  • Directly supervise the Plant Manager and the administrative operations of the business
Producer Engagement
  • Daily producer engagement and booking of lambs as per sales orders and production schedules.
  • Management of producer relationships; maintaining a transparent and professional engagement.
  • Negotiating producer pricing as and when required.
Business Development
  • Negotiating commercial agreements with Key Accounts, and serve as the primary point of contact for existing Key Accounts. Manage Key Account profitability.
  • Lead the process of new customer acquisitions and onboarding.
  • Explore the feasibility and viability of lamb exports outside of Canada.
  • Engage with various government departments and agencies to access available funding.
  • Oversee and marketing, digital or social media activities.
About You
  • Animal/Meat Science, Agriculture, Hospitality or Business Qualification preferred
  • High school diploma/GED required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software; QuickBooks/Sage skills are a plus
  • A “can do” attitude; a problem solver; a “let’s make this better” philosophy
  • Project management knowledge
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees at NLMC in a respectful manner – from the plant floor to the Board effectively and clearly in both written and verbal situations.
  • Knowledge of GMP’s, SOP’s, HACCP, and other quality and safety programs in food processing environments.
  • Excellent understanding of manufacturing operations; butchery and meat operations experience a plus.
  • Track record of people development; Strong ability to influence, provide leadership, develop teams and foster teamwork. Effective facilitation/training skills
Job Types: Full-time, PermanentSalary: $50,000.00-$70,000.00 per yearSchedule:
