Job Description

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is a unique Indigenous Institute, recognized by community, government, and institutions of higher learning, as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP offers postsecondary, secondary, trades education and training. SNP has formal partnerships with nine publicly funded Ontario Universities and Colleges and collaborates with six Ontario-based Indigenous owned and controlled post-secondary Institutes.For more information, visit www.snpolytechnic.comAt the SNP-STEAM ACADEMY, students earn a high school diploma, an industry-recognized college diploma, and gain relevant work experience in their field of study. The school creates a seamless program for students to acquire the academic, technical, and workplace skills and knowledge that employers need.Function & OverviewThe Principal of the SNP STEAM Academy understands the vision behind the development of this innovative learning program.The Principal is responsible for the overall supervision and operation of the SNP STEAM Academy in compliance with all applicable legislation and regulations and SNP governance, values and operating policies while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; and contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).The Principal provides instructional leadership, program planning, school management, community relations, business management and professional development. The Principal will build productive relationships with business, community, and education partners to ensure academic and workplace learning opportunities that meet the goals of the school. The Principal will be experienced in work-based learning and will participate in continuing professional development opportunities to support STEAM programming.DutiesThe duties of the Principal include, without limitation:Leadership

  • Providing visionary instructional leadership to ensure the highest quality of teaching, learning and educational experiences;
  • Encouraging and providing support for the professional development of staff and participating in ongoing professional development;
  • Conducting performance appraisals and providing constructive feedback for improvements;
  • Accessing, analyzing, interpreting, and using relevant data in decision-making and reporting;
  • Overseeing the selection of relevant and culturally appropriate educational materials for instruction and assessment;
  • Administering the program budget and implementing decisions regarding the allocation of funding and the development of appropriate instructional programs;
  • Leading and promoting a positive school climate by embedding Hodinǫshǫ:nih values into all school programming, curricular and extra-curricular, demonstrating fairness, sensitivity, and respect for persons from diverse backgrounds;
  • Establishing relationships and collaborating with community support services to best meet student needs;
  • Serving as a conduit between college, and industry partners;
  • Assessing the current use of technology in the business operations of the school and establishing and monitoring a long-term technology plan for the school;
  • Providing operational updates to the SNP STEAM Academy Steering Committee and seeking clarification of policy as required;
Program Development
  • Completing the private school registration process, submitting all required documentation, and addressing recommendations for improvement as per the Ministry of Education inspection reports;
  • Working with established partners in college and industry and within grant specifications to plan the secondary school programs and student experiences with college and industry partners keeping in mind Indigenous learning outcomes;
  • Verifying that student programming meets the needs of both the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and College Diploma and/or certificate graduation requirements in compliance with the Ministry of Education standards;
  • Developing creative marketing tools and recruitment plans to promote STEAM Academy to parents, students, surrounding communities, media, and all stakeholders;
  • Working collaboratively with staff to develop, organize, and implement STEAM Academy’s orientation program for new students;
  • Working with administrative staff, the Learning Resource teacher, and Social and Guidance Counsellors, to provide academic and mental health supports needed to ensure student success;
  • Assisting with recruitment, interviewing, and hiring STEAM Academy staff in compliance with Six Nations Polytechnic’s (SNP) policies and procedures;
  • Creating flexible master schedules, timetables, academic and events calendars;
  • Working collaboratively with the Vice Principal and Guidance Counsellor to individualize student academic schedules ensuring each student’s plan meets the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and College Diploma and/or certificate requirements;
  • Liaising and helping to structure a partnership with surrounding school boards, including GEDSB, SNGR Federal elementary schools, SNP, and other post-secondary institutes;
  • Establishing a positive and professional rapport with students, staff and parents/guardians that engenders respect and adherence to the most stringent ethical and professional standards in order to serve as a role model for students, school personnel, and community stakeholders;
  • Leading the development of program-specific behavioural and learning expectations, differentiated instruction and assessment methods; and learning experiences that incorporate Indigenous pedagogy and interconnectedness;
  • Developing plans and procedures for the health and safety of students and staff, while complying with the Safe School Act, OCT Sexual Abuse Prevention Training, SNP, and Public Health guidelines, including student transportation;
General Administration
  • Facilitating meetings and collaborating with the STEAM Academy Steering Committee;
  • Developing an approved work plan for the efficient and effective discharge of all tasks and activities;
  • Knowing, understanding, and following existing SNP policies and processes, while supporting the collaborative development and effective implementation of new and emergent policies and processes;
  • Preparing and presenting any reports, curriculum documents, educational policies, and procedures while adhering to deadlines and reporting requirements;
  • Utilizing e-Learning tools and technology in synchronous and asynchronous situations to enrich curriculum, instruction, student participation and motivation;
  • Supporting STEAM Academy’s Mohawk and Cayuga language programs and embedding language into daily activities and operations;
  • Maintaining a supportive environment conducive to learning and working which demonstrates Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind; and
  • Other related duties, as required.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field;
  • Master of Education or a related field;
  • OCT (Ontario Teaching Certification) in good standing;
  • 5 years or more working in a similar role;
  • Ontario Principal Qualification Program Part 2 (PQP);
  • Previous experience with Ministry of Education school inspections and compliance with Ministry requirements; and
  • Previous experience working with Indigenous communities in the field of education.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Previous knowledge of curriculum administration experience required;
  • Experience dealing directly with parents/guardians, ideally has been involved with admissions and intake of new families;
  • A general and current knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
  • Sound interpersonal skills including communication, organization, negotiation, and professional judgement;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with standard desktop computing programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database applications, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system; and
  • Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinǫshǫ:nih/ Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind);
Criminal Record CheckThe Principal will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at STEAM Academy, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by August 31 every 2nd year in which they are employed by Six Nations Polytechnic.At Six Nations Polytechnic, we are committed to diversity and inclusion as we continue and expand our efforts to become a more inclusive, safe and respectful workplace.
