Job Description

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. If you are self-motivated, looking to take on a new challenge where you can make a difference, enjoy both responsibility and accountability with one of British Columbia #39;s most inclusive and environmentally conscious municipalities, we look forward to receiving your application!The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of clerical functions including; receiving, documenting and directing enquiries and complaints from the public, assisting in processing court/exhibit documents, providing police information and interpretation relating to Federal and Provincial statutes, regulations and municipal bylaws to other police agencies, the public and others. This position acts as the liaison between members, various detachments, Crown Counsel and Court Registry personnel; receives, reviews, and processes reports to Crown Counsel; and monitors upcoming court dates. The position also maintains the exhibits and property systems of the RCMP to ensure their availability for court purposes and dispositions described by law. The incumbent is responsible for the continuity and accountability of exhibits within the exhibit area until the conclusion of the investigation. The incumbent is required to process and interpret the policies and regulations as it pertains to Federal and Provincial Statutes statutes and must be able to provide information and interpretation of all related acts to members of the general public. This position may be exposed to graphic and explicit subject matter and may be required to testify in court. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time. Hours of work for this position may include night and weekend shifts. Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:

  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. Minimum 2 years #39; experience in a police detachment.
  3. Minimum 2 years #39; experience using RCMP records management systems, including PRIME. Experience using CPIC and JUSTIN are an asset.
  4. Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  5. Considerable knowledge of and demonstrated skills in computer word processing applications and equipment
  6. Strong knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, composition, and commonly used RCMP terminology, and of office practices and procedures.
  7. A minimum accurate keyboard speed of 60 wpm is required. Proof of typing speed or assessment results from the last 24 months must be included with your application. If you require information on where to obtain a typing/keyboarding speed test, please contact yourhr@northcowichan.ca.
  8. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 BC Driver #39;s License; a satisfactory current driver #39;s abstract will be required.
  9. Sound working knowledge of the Criminal Code, Federal and Provincial statutes, Municipal Bylaws and the rules of collecting evidence.
  10. Knowledge of Access to Information and Privacy Act regulations relating to the disclosure of Protected Information.
  11. Working knowledge of the structure of the RCMP and its relationship with other Federal and Provincial departments and Municipal administrations, police reporting and standard police procedures.
  12. Ability to obtain a restricted and non-restricted firearms license, and Solicitor General Special Provincial Constable designation.
  13. Independence of judgment and capability of working under minimal supervision.
  14. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website. The successful candidate must obtain and maintain security clearance levels as established by the RCMP.
