Job Description

JOB TITLE: Reading Rocks FacilitatorMAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Reading Rocks Facilitator is responsible for assisting in the coordination, delivery, safety, supervision, and evaluation of the Reading Rocks program. They work with 5-10 child-tutor pairs either in-person or online via Microsoft Teams. There is the possibility of additional sessions, if mutually agreed upon. During this time, a facilitator will ensure that volunteers select and implement appropriate activities and games that build each child’s skills in phonics/phonemic awareness, sight word vocabulary, and fluency according to their learning profile. They will also undertake administrative duties, such as communicating with parents, ensuring data is collected, and reporting is completed in a timely manner. Training will be provided and is mandatory for all facilitators.COMPENSATION:

  • Ontario Certified Teachers receive $900 for the 9-week program session ($100 per week for each assigned session).
  • Non-Ontario Certified Teachers receive $725 for the 9-week program session ($80 per week for each assigned session).

  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support the Reading Rocks Program Coordinator to implement and deliver the Reading Rocks Program
  • Uphold the Mission of CDL and its programs and services while conducting oneself in a professional manner as a representative of the Association
  • Create a positive learning environment that encourages relationship-building between the tutor, the student, and yourself
  • All facilitators must arrive at least 15 minutes before their session is scheduled to begin and remain available up to 15 minutes after each session
  • Online facilitators must ensure that they have reliable and secure high-speed internet access, a laptop, a microphone, speakers, and a webcam. Headphones are recommended.
  • Online facilitators must create their own private Team in MS Teams for each session they are supervising, and then create an individual channel for each of the 5-volunteer tutor/child pairs assigned to them. They must also manage each channel by ensuring that all volunteers, families and CDL staff who need access have access. Training will be provided.
  • Analyse the assessment data, and help the volunteer tutor to determine each childs area of need
  • Available throughout the duration of each session to support each volunteer tutor as needed (e.g., lesson planning, data collection, behavioural concern, safety issue, technology troubleshooting)
  • Supervise volunteer tutor/child pairs by observing and/or taking part in a portion of the lesson at least once during each session
  • Ensure each volunteer tutor is fulfilling their responsibilities related to program delivery, progress tracking, and data collection
  • Ensure each child is setting realistic, attainable goals for each instructional component area
  • Monitor the development of a poster board OR a personal channel within the Microsoft Teams platform for communication with the child and parent(s)/guardian(s) throughout the program, based on the child’s interests and progress
  • Manage all communications to families and volunteers via email, including program surveys, weekly updates, notices to parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding changes in scheduling or cancellation of sessions, and responding to email inquiries as required
  • Submit Progress (mid-point; 4 weeks) and Summative reports (end of the program; 8 weeks) for all volunteer tutor/student pairings that can be shared with parent(s)/guardian(s) no more than three days after the due date established by the coordinator.
  • Meet with volunteer tutors to discuss assessments, progress and next steps as required. This may occur outside of program hours if appropriate (e.g., 15-30 mins before or after a regularly scheduled session.)
  • Regulates attendance for volunteer tutors and students, and follows-up if there are late or absentee concerns
  • Conduct one Volunteer Performance Evaluation on each volunteer tutor’s performance throughout the 8 weeks
  • Any other duties, as required
QUALIFICATIONS: Eligible candidates for the Reading Rocks Program Facilitator position include individuals who have earned a post-secondary degree or are currently earning a degree and have:
  • Passed a Police Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check within the last 12 months
  • Access to a quiet and confidential workspace
  • Previous experience working with individuals with learning disabilities and/or children
  • Previous experience facilitation online or in-person programs
  • Reliable transportation to and from the program site and/or access to reliable and secure high-speed internet access, a personal computer (laptop or desktop), a microphone, speakers, and a webcam. Headphones are recommended.
  • Bachelor of Education is an asset, but not required
  • For online tutors, previous experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Teams an asset, but not required
  • Previous experience managing a group of people, such as volunteers, is an asset, but not required
  • Previous experience in the Reading Rocks program is an asset, but not required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Flexible hours and delivery of programs during evenings and weekends, in-person and online, according to parent and organizational demand
