For more information, visit www.josephbranthospital.ca.POSITION SUMMARY:Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Laboratory, the Pathologist Assistant (PA) will work under the supervision of the pathologists and in coordination with the Medical Laboratory Technologists in Pathology to ensure delivery of surgical pathology services in a timely and professional manner. Specifically, the PA will be responsible for opening and grossing surgical pathology specimens and biopsies. The PA will also assist in the performance of autopsies as necessary.RESPONSIBILITIES:Grossing of surgical specimens and biopsies:

  • Specimen opening, gross description, dissection and selection of appropriate tissue sections for light microscopy and/or other ancillary testing
  • Specimen photography and/or specimen preparation for radiologic assessment as necessary
Department-related duties including but not limited to:
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the gross rooms and autopsy suite
  • Maintenance of surgical specimen library and discarding of specimens in accordance with departmental guidelines and established safety procedures
  • Participating in Research/Quality Improvement programs carried out within the department or other departments within the organization
  • Maintaining current knowledge of grossing guidelines and assisting in the development and maintenance of departmental grossing protocols in accordance with CAP and CCO standards
Assist in the performance of post-mortem examinations:
  • Preparation of the autopsy suite and body for examination
  • Photography of the body, organs, gross specimens and other pertinent material
  • Assist in external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection and dictation or recording of data
  • Obtain biologic specimens such as blood, tissue, or toxicological material for studies
  • Prepare the body for release
  • Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of relevant recent experience is required, accepted experience includes:
  • Completion of an ASCP certification eligible Masters in Clinical Science Pathologists Assistant Graduate program or equivalent
  • Previous work as a Pathology Assistant with both grossing and autopsy experience
  • Foreign trained physicians/pathologists with grossing experience
  • Working knowledge of the gross manifestations of disease.
  • Ability to accurately assess gross surgical specimens and select appropriate sections for microscopic evaluation.
  • Working knowledge of CAP and departmental grossing guidelines.
  • Ability to compose accurate, complete, and succinct grossing descriptions.
  • Ability to complete a post-mortem dissection under the guidance of the pathologist.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a direct assistant to the pathologists
  • Strong computer and computer-assisted technology skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within the laboratory and all service clients
  • Strong observation skills, exceptional attention to detail and sound clinical judgment
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of the Body Substance Precautions, PPE and lab hygiene
  • Working knowledge of safe chemical handling, storage protocols and emergency spill procedures
  • Excellent performance record and attendance
