Job Description

Union/Affiliation:Administrative Professional Excluded StaffPay range:SFU Department Descr:IT Services - CIO OfficePosition Grade:18# of openings:1Biweekly Hours:72In this newly created position, the Chief Information Security Officer is responsible for providing executive leadership to SFU’s communications infrastructure, computational and storage services for IT systems and leading and governing the security of information to ensure University-wide compliance. The Chief Information Security Officer’s portfolio includes servers, storage, networks, systems operations and institutional security, ensuring the provision of a reliable, functional and secure technology infrastructure. The role develops, leads and integrates security and governance practices across IT services to meet compliance standards, protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data and physical IT assets across the University.Drawing on previous experience as an information security leader in a complex environment, the CISO will be skilled at managing relationships and organizational demands across numerous cross-functional disciplines. They will prudently manage and minimize risks while also working to enable rather than inhibit initiatives proposed by various stakeholders. As an information security leader of one of Canada’s largest institutions, they will also have an opportunity to network with, collaborate, and leverage relationships with peers at other universities and related organizations.This is an exciting opportunity for a leader to enhance the security capabilities of one of Canada’s most prominent academic institutions, while being surrounded by an environment of learning, creativity, inclusion, and peers who genuinely want to make a positive impact.Qualifications:Masters degree in information security or information technology and ten years of related experience in information security, contract and vendor negotiations and a Certified Information Systems Professional (CISSP) or a Certified Information Security Management (CISM) designation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Expert knowledge of business risk, risk assessment, and risk-based decision making.
  • Knowledge of security, risk and control frameworks and standards such as ISO 27001 and 27002, SANS-CAG, NIST, FISMA, COBIT, COSO and ITIL.
  • Knowledge of: OSI, IT infrastructure, cloud, application development languages, tools and frameworks, database technologies, web technologies, next gen mobile, network architecture, enterprise architecture, and directory services.
  • Knowledge of: firewall, intrusion detection, cyber-attack tools and defenses, encryption, certificate authority, web filtering, anti-malware, anti-phishing, identity and access management, multi factor authentication.
  • Good understanding of and ability to communicate industry developments, and the role and impact of technology in the university.
  • Understanding of cloud, SaaS, and IoT architectures, and their implications on information security strategy.
  • Excellent customer service, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to develop and execute information security policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to communicate security and risk-related concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences (in business terms).
  • Ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams to achieve tactical and strategic goals; an innovative leader, problem solver and consultant.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to provide effective mentorship and coaching to individuals and teams.
