Job Description

BCIT’s Program Advising department is seeking an enthusiastic, positive individual for a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Program Advisor position. As a Program Advisor, you are equally comfortable in a recruiting and an advising role. Program Advisors provide guidance on the complexities of BCIT’s educational options and support students through their complete student lifecycle from pre-admission through to graduation. Program Advisors work collaboratively with departments within the Registrar’s Office, Student Services and academic areas to effectively communicate information for students to meet their educational goals, make informed choices and access appropriate services.Full-time studies Advisors have a heavy emphasis on recruitment. Each Advisor will actively support on-site and virtual high school recruitment within BC as well as other off campus activities including career and trade fairs, presentations to agencies and large employers. On campus and/or virtual recruiting events include BCIT Big Info nights and individual program information sessions in the evenings. The remainder of work includes advising by telephone, in-person and virtual drop-in and email.Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies) Advisors work one-on-one with prospective and current Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies) students to assist them in course and program selection to meet their educational and career goals. You will bring strong facilitation, organizational and administrative skills to this high volume role. Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies) Advisors work a minimum of one evening per week and are on rotation to provide service at our Downtown Campus. You will be required to work a Saturday during Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies) term start and must be available to attend in-person and/or virtual evening information sessionsDuties & ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist students to make informed decisions about their educational options (through full-time or/and part-time) by consulting and guiding students to assess program and course selection needs, advising on specific program entrance requirements and processes, providing successful applicant profile information and strategies for admission to competitive programs, advising students on transfer credit, advanced placement and laddering options to higher credentials and providing appropriate agency, counselling and faculty referrals
  • Understand the unique needs and complexities of our diverse student population and facilitate the appropriate referrals to specialized services
  • Deliver immediate support to students in distress; follow up with appropriate referrals
  • Maintain knowledge of labour market trends, education systems and BCIT policies and services
  • Research and update resources to maintain current and in-depth knowledge of programs
  • Promote and recruit by participating in PSIBC (Post-secondary Institutions of BC) high school liaison visits, providing follow-up visits with high schools students and counsellors, participating in external community events and career fairs, and developing and maintaining strong relationships with high school counsellors and educators
  • Administer Flexible Learning (formerly Part-Time Studies) Programs, which involves approving and processing program declarations within timelines, facilitating program modifications and course substitutions, processing transfer credit requests and auditing BCIT credentials within convocation deadlines
  • Contribute to departmental initiatives including assigned projects/duties.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:
  • BCIT Diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in a similar role
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BCIT programs, systems and services
  • An excellent working knowledge of the BC post-secondary educational system, particularly in relation to technology and trades training programs, including career opportunities and labour market trends
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working with and advising youths, adults and a multicultural population.
  • Demonstrated ability to make formal, effective presentations, and in public speaking
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team player
  • Must be able to perform duties professionally and tactfully under pressure
  • Superior time management and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication, using tact, diplomacy and cultural sensitivity
  • Computer literacy and keyboarding skills; specifically including a student information systems (such as Banner) and Microsoft Office applications, plus the ability to use other software programs as required; experience with multimedia software preferred
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to reliable personal transportation – mileage will be compensated
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment up to approximately 20 pounds.
Advisors must be comfortable working directly with members of the public in an office environment one a one-on-one basis as well as in larger settings (career fairs, high school sites).Additional InformationBenefits – Why you’d love working with us

Salary Range Salary Range: $51,044 to $63,347 per annum.Additional Salary InformationSalary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
