BCIT’s SMART Operations Department is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time Research Associate position. This is a temporary, full-time, intermediate-level position.Are you interested in working on projects that can make a real difference in reducing our province’s (and world’s) power consumption and carbon footprint This is an exciting opportunity to work in a collegial, team environment on leading-edge Smart Grid technology research projects.Duties & ResponsibilitiesDuties & Responsibilities:The successful candidate will be responsible for activities in the BCIT Microgrid control and data centre. A solid personal productivity process including task management and project documentation is essential. Ongoing responsibilities will include installing and maintaining networking and computing equipment, overseeing our production environment, testing redundant systems, and performing maintenance and backups and creating system documentation.Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated abilities in the following:Working in a multi-server-room data centre environment (Dell PowerEdge)Administering Ubuntu Linux (16.04 to 20.04+) and other Linux distributionsAdministering LAMP setups and mail serverAutomating tasks using scripting (bash, PHP, Python, C#, etc.)Experience using virtualization technologies (Citrix XenServer strongly preferred)Administering cloud deployment including docker-based infrastructureDesigning and implementing networks (especially using IPv6) – our DNS servers use BIND 9Demonstrated ability to weigh security implications when delivering solutionsConfiguring Juniper, Cisco, Nortel, RuggedCom routers and switchesMaintaining and upgrading/updating UPSs (battery replacement mostly)Working with Storage Area Networks (using iSCSI preferred)Knowledge of setting up a safe and secure smart substation system, including IEC 61850 protocol experienceFamiliarity with Database Management Systems (DBMS) (mySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server)Experience in database design, development, and administrationThe following would be an asset for candidates:Working with Real-time Digital Simulator (RTDS) designsKnowledge of other communication protocols/frameworks such as IEC-60870-5-104, OPC UA, MODBUS TCP, gPRCBasic knowledge of Siemens API-based interfaces (e.g., Desigo, eCar and REST)QualificationsQualifications:Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Software Development or equivalent combination of education and experience6+ years experience in network and/or systems administration, with experience or the potential to lead teamsAdditional InformationBENEFITS OF WORKING AT BCIT:Being a part of BC’s Top 100 Employers, and a member of the CCDI.A generous Total Compensation package which includes extended health and dental benefits and a superb pension plan.Access to Professional Development Funds and opportunities for career development.Increase your knowledge with Tuition waivers for BCIT courses.Enjoy discounted access to our fitness facilities (including classes like Yoga and Zumba).Additional Wellness and Employee Assistance programs.Salary Range $69,865 - $92,712 per annumAdditional Salary InformationSalary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
