Job Description

The OpportunityReporting directly to the Coordinator, Invasive Species or designated staff, this role is responsible for supporting the Invasive Species and Forestry programs implemented by the Town of Caledon. As the Assistant, Invasive Species (Summer Student), you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
  • Carry out operations throughout Town-owned parks, woodlots, and streetscape environments including but not limited to invasive species monitoring and management, street tree inventory, and tree maintenance operations.
  • Perform duties to support the planning and implementation of the Town of Caledon’s Lymantria dispar dispar (LDD) Moth Management Program.
  • Ensure efficient, conscientious, and safe work is carried out in all tree maintenance activities and work programs as prepared by the Coordinator, Invasive Species.
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements.
  • Be responsible to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, the Town of Caledon Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
COVID-19: In consideration of the current pandemic and Public Health orders, the Town of Caledon is providing limited in-person services as Town Hall is open to the public by appointment only. The successful candidate for Assistant, Invasive Species (Summer Student), will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).Please note, Summer Student/ Intern positions will be subject to operational needs and dependent upon COVID-19 restrictions.The Ideal CandidateWe are seeking an enthusiastic student who has a high school diploma and is enrolled in a post-secondary education program and returing to school in Fall 2022. Our ideal candidate has experience in data entry, preparation of draft reports, and proficient computer skills in Microsoft Software. Experience with native plant species identification, including knowledge of non-native invasive species and forest pest/diseases is an asset. Experience in Invasive species control and conducting urban/street tree inventory is an asset.The ideal candidate will have demonstrated customer service excellence. We are seeking an individual with superior interpersonal skills, a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.Satisfactory proof of schooling or return to school, may be requested.New employees who commence employment on or after November 15, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as a condition of employment. Being fully vaccinated is determined as the status of having received the full series of approved vaccines (both doses of a two dose vaccine series, one dose of a single dose vaccine series) and any additional doses required and approved by Health Canada and having satisfied the full post vaccination period required to ensure vaccination efficacy. The Town of Caledon reserves the right to request proof of vaccination at any time. Acceptable proof includes an Ontario Ministry of Health COVID-19 vaccine receipt which you can obtain through the Provincial portal https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/, or other government-issued vaccine passport or certification.
