Job Title: Legal Counsel - RegulatoryJob Level: LEGAL BDate Posted: November 19, 2024Closing Date: December 3, 2024Job Type: Permanent Full-Time Category: External OpportunitiesLocation: CalgaryAltaLink’s Law and Regulatory Group is currently looking for a regulatory lawyer to join their team.The successful candidate will provide legal direction, advice and support on a variety of routine and complex electricity regulatory matters including facility applications, interpretation of applicable legislation, rules and regulatory policy. The candidate will also oversee the drafting of application-related materials and act as counsel in regulatory hearings before the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC or Commission). The successful candidate will be eager to learn and be mentored by senior regulatory counsel, but also comfortable independently managing their own regulatory files. The candidate will have demonstrated organizational skills to prioritize a high-volume workload in a time sensitive environment. The candidate will also have a practical approach to problem solving, a demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, and ability to manage files to conclusion in line with budgeted parameters. Responsibilities:

  • Advise on a range of regulatory and associated legal matters, including facility applications.
  • Draft regulatory applications and related regulatory filings.
  • Advise on the legal and business implications of regulatory and/or legal approaches while anticipating legal and regulatory concerns and devising strategies to resolve them.
  • Provide legal advice and support for compliance with Alberta Reliability Standards and Independent System Operator Rules.
  • Collaborate with other areas across the Law and Regulatory department to manage legal risk.
  • Conduct legal research to support regulatory applications and related regulatory filings.
  • Represent AltaLink in hearings as a member of a legal team in proceedings before the AUC.
  • Manage external counsel.
  • Work closely with other AltaLink groups such as project management and operations to protect AltaLink’s legal interests.
  • Demonstrate and continuously build a solid understanding of regulatory law and practice and keep abreast of current developments and trends.
RequirementsQualifications:
  • A license to practice law in Alberta.
  • A university degree (LLB; JD) in law and a current member of Alberta law society.
  • 2-5 years of related legal experience.
  • An understanding of regulatory or energy law.
  • Experience providing advice in a team setting on projects and/or filings.
  • Ability to build relationships in across functional groups.
  • Demonstrated initiative and confidence.
  • Ability to provide practical legal advice and assess risk.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work as a team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a time-sensitive environment.
